An enthusiastic and inspirational teacher is required to teach Classics to boys aged 9 to 13, including Common Entrance to Eton, Winchester, Harrow etc. The ability to coach a wide variety of sports would be a real advantage, and an eagerness to contribute to other areas of this flourishing boarding school is vital, as is a sense of humour.

Job Description
Teaching Responsibilities
1. To teach Classics to boys in Years 5 to 8.
2. To prepare boys in Year 8 for Common Entrance exams to a wide variety of schools including Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Wellington, Marlborough, Stowe, Charterhouse etc.
3. To set and mark internal exams as well as to mark CE trial exams.
4. To review boys’ progress at regular intervals in line with the school’s ‘mark reading’ system.
5. To supervise ‘prep’ and ‘reading’ times.
6. To attend parent/teacher meetings.
7. To write end of term reports each term.
8. To attend departmental meetings.
General Responsibilities
1. ‘Tutoring’ of a small group of boys in Years 6 to 8 including communication with their parents.
2. Coaching of sport on a daily basis (for the right candidate) and/or supervision of off-games boys or the changing room.
3. Supervision of school as a member of the daily duty team (Monday to Saturday) and as part of the ‘Sunday team’ from time to time as required.
4. Provision of two evening activities (6.35pm to 7.25pm Monday to Friday) during the Michaelmas and Lent terms, and one evening activity in the Summer term.
5. Each member of staff has one day off from Tuesday to Friday in compensation for above duties.
6. Provision of two activities on Thursday afternoon as required.
7. Supervision of a prep room on a weekly basis as required.
8. Each member of staff has a whole day off from Tuesday to Friday in compensation for above duties…and 19 weeks holiday a year! 8 weeks in the summer, 4 weeks at each of Christmas and Easter, and 3 one week half-terms.
9. With regard to pensions, staff have the choice of being in TPS or a Defined Contribution Scheme. In each case, the employer’s contribution will be just over 28%.
10. Duty to promote and safeguard the welfare of the boys.
Person Specification
1. Ability to teach Classics to boys from Year 5 to Year 8.
2. Ability to teach Classics across a wide ability range including boys for whom 50% at Common Entrance represents the height of their aspirations, as well as boys who have the potential to be Eton and Winchester Scholars in the future.
3. Ability to inspire boys to feel confident and secure in their knowledge of Classics.
4. Ability to enable boys to enjoy the subject of Classics.
5. Willingness to contribute to the life of a busy boarding school on a wide variety of fronts.
6. Ability to offer high level and compassionate pastoral care.
7. Ability to communicate with parents effectively.
8. A well-developed sense of humour.
9. An understanding that, at its heart, prep school life should be fun.
10. A good level of competency in the use of ICT in the classroom and beyond with a view to ICT being used to enhance the boys’ learning.
11. Ability to enable boys to enjoy their learning in the Lower School.
12. Ability to work as part of a team.
13. Willingness to promote and safeguard the welfare of all the boys.
