Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Head of Economics to start in August 2025.
The Department
Economics is one of the most popular and successful departments at Brighton College and is well established as a Sixth Form course, currently following the Edexcel specification. The department consists of seven members of staff. There are currently over 180 pupils studying the subject across the Sixth Form. The results in recent years have been excellent, achieving 97%, 84% and 94% A*A in 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively.
The department also has a comprehensive Oxbridge programme, with much recent success in this area achieving thirteen offers in the past four years. Pupils participate in various competitions (e.g. we won the IEA Budget Challenge Competition twice) and they also run the Brighton College Economics Society. Every Lower Sixth former is part of the Entrepreneurship Challenge, culminating in the Dragons Den-style competition between houses.
The renowned Keynesian economist, Lord Robert Skidelsky, is a former pupil and he was also Chairman of Governors at the College until 2016.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing the Economics department and taking responsibility for the teaching, progress and attainment of all pupils in Year 12 and 13. There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the co-curricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of almost 100 school societies. Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application.
All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our super-curricular Masterclass programme; this a is a series of sessions focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.
All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period.
Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
