About the Borough
In Sutton, there is much for us to be proud of both as a council and as a borough. This includes high levels of resident satisfaction, the quality of our services, our success in addressing our financial challenges to date, the way that we involve and engage with residents on key issues facing the borough, and the enthusiastic and motivated staff that we employ.
Looking ahead, there are plans for the delivery of new homes and new schools and the London Cancer Hub is being developed, while the Council is also seen as a driving force within the South London Partnership of five outer south west London boroughs focused on strategic growth, regeneration and investment.
All of this demonstrates a good track record and an authority that is ambitious and set to deliver more improvements for the borough. We've set out our vision for the future of Sutton in our corporate plan - Ambitious for Sutton. This strategic plan will shape the outcomes we achieve, the services we provide, and the impact we have on residents, to make Sutton a great place to live, work and raise a family.
Situated in Zone 5, Sutton is less than 30 minutes by train from central London, and south and south west London are easily accessible by public transport. There are 10 train stations which serve key neighbourhoods within the borough providing direct connections to London Victoria, London Bridge, London Blackfriars and St Pancras International. Sutton also has direct rail connections with Epsom, Dorking, Guildford and Horsham, as well as Wimbledon for an interchange with the London Underground and West Croydon for the London Overground. There’s also an extensive road network which provides close and easy access to the M25 and M23.
About the Role and our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a passionate and proactive Health Visitor who shares our commitment to improving health outcomes for children and families in Sutton. You’ll work closely with the Head of Service to deliver the strategic vision for children’s services, fostering collaboration between Health and Local Authority partners to achieve the best results.
You will bring a strong commitment to empowering families, enabling them to take responsibility for their health through education, support, and community-based care. Your practice will be guided by the four principles of health visiting:
* Searching for health needs
* Raising health awareness
* Influencing health-related policies
* Facilitating health-enhancing activities
What You’ll Do
* Deliver the Healthy Child Programme to Sutton’s families with a focus on quality and impact.
* Identify health needs early and provide tailored interventions to help children reach their full potential.
* Ensure vulnerable children are supported with timely, effective care and interventions.
We’re seeking a compassionate, adaptable professional who thrives in collaborative environments, values evidence-based practice, and is eager to make a meaningful difference in the community.
About the Role
Competitive Salary Aligned with NHS Pay Scales
From 1st September 2022, Children’s Health Services offers a competitive starting salary designed to match or exceed NHS pay scales.
Health Visitors in Sutton are placed on a mid-range spinal point (SP 32) of Grade 8, with a starting salary of £42,840—exceeding the NHS equivalent of £40,701.
This ensures our staff are rewarded competitively while supporting their vital work in the community.
As a Health Visitor, you will play a key role in reducing health inequalities for children, young people, and their families in Sutton. Through the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, you will independently assess the health needs of service users and implement tailored care packages to support them.
Reporting to the Head of Service, your work will include conducting vital assessments at key developmental stages, such as antenatal contacts, new birth visits, 6-8 week checks, and 1- and 2-year reviews. Your experience in these areas will be essential to ensuring the success of the role and the service.
Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. You’ll work closely with children’s centre staff, GPs, social services, family support workers, school nursing teams, and other partners to provide holistic support to families across Sutton.
Newly qualified Health Visitors will benefit from a 6-month preceptorship period with dedicated guidance from a senior health visitor. Beyond this, you’ll receive ongoing support to develop your skills, expand your knowledge, and confidently manage enhanced caseloads.
