The job itself
We are seeking a proactive and outgoing individual with enthusiasm and commitment to assist in the provision of the library service at HMP Humber within the East Riding of Yorkshire. This post is advertised on a temporary part-time basis and is potentially subject to TUPE Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations 2006.
The Council Library Service is contracted to provide a library service to HMP Humber, a category C male prison housing over 1,000 prisoners. Due to a prison merge some years ago, HMP Humber has 2 libraries, one located on each side of the prison. The successful application would be expected to work at both sites which are linked by an external pedestrian walkway of approximately half a mile.
The Learning and Skills manager oversees the library contract and budgets at the HMP Humber and as such works closely with the library staff. As a team member you will be expected to take an active part in the promotion and role of the library in supporting education and training. Duties will include:
1. Day to day running of the prison library
2. Enquiry work
3. Maintenance of stock
4. Support of promotional and reader development activities
You must have excellent customer care skills and a genuine interest in working within a diverse prison community, which includes ethnic minorities. Interpersonal and problem-solving skills are important, as you will be expected to communicate with all the prison population including prisoners, staff, and other agencies working within the prison. You must be dynamic and motivated, able to work within a team and be willing to embrace change. Experience and knowledge of ICT applications are essential.
The successful applicant must complete a satisfactory medical clearance plus all clearance and vetting processes prior to commencement of employment and once completed, undertake HMP Humber’s induction training session.
HMP Humber has a list of specific key policies and procedures in place that the successful applicant shall need to understand and adhere to once employment has commenced.
