Job Introduction
The Director, Product Engineering (Platform) has responsibility for and leads multidisciplinary software engineering teams that develop the key back-end services that provide common technical capabilities to create, manage and discover the BBC's content.
This role will lead a large, high-performing software engineering team that establishes common service implementation services that can be built to be released, consumed, observed and scaled. Leading across Product Group and broader to ensure faster time to value is driven for audiences from its digital products.
We are flexible on the location of this role as it is hybrid and could be contracted out of any of our major UK locations (Newcastle/ Manchester/ London or Glasgow would be preferable)
Main Responsibilities
Responsible for leading the engineering teams developing the common capabilities to manage and discover the BBC's content and the core components required to evolve audiences' experiences in a scalable and sustainable way.
* Works closely with counterparts for Enablement, Experience, Data and Architecture in support of the Director, Engineering & Data, to deliver a high performing engineering organisation
* In partnership with Director of Product Management, Platform, develop a multi-year technical vision and strategy for platform evolution, ensuring alignment with audience needs and technological advancement
* Ensures development approach is aligned with the overall BBC engineering and architecture strategy and adheres to standards and principles that ensures engineering excellence
* Ensures teams adhere to software engineering best practice
* Deliver the function's strategy as efficiently as possible; driving maximum value through reducing costs, increasing income, ensuring appropriate investment to maximise return to the audience/customer
* Partner with executive leadership and functional leaders to identify opportunities for platform driven innovation that enhances overall business performance
* Foster strong relationships with key leaders across product group, technology group and wider business stakeholders to ensure cohesive strategy execution and alignment of platform capabilities with business needs
* Spearhead the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies, tools and methodologies that can enhance platform capabilities and operational efficiency
* Ensure operational excellence in the products and services delivered and achieve our availability goals. Establish KPIS and scalability targets for the platform ensuring it can effectively support growth and match evolving audience demands
* Drive improvements in the BBC's continuous delivery/integration practices
* Continuously benchmark against external comparators and identify ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency, including identifying aggregating functions for potential external or partnership delivery
* Manage resources (financial, technological and people) optimally to deliver the strategic goals of Product Group year-on-year
* Contributes to the healthy promotion of engineering culture in software engineering, investing in our people and the developer experience
* Provide inspirational leadership, support career development and talent retention

Are You The Right Candidate?
Essential Requirements:
* Extensive, demonstrable experience building complex consumer facing digital products and internal facing products across web and mobile applications in demanding publishing environments
* Experience working in a media publishing and content production environment would be beneficial
* Experience in a senior leadership position responsible for building, motivating and leading high performing development teams
* Passionate about software engineering best practice include agile, TDD, continuous delivery, micro services, measurement and software metrics and experienced in selecting suitable practices for the team and situation
* As an expert in their field, they will provide professional leadership and act as role model to their teams and colleagues
* Adept at managing numerous, diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing numerous competing priorities
* A convincing and persuasive communicator, required to modify beliefs and opinions of teams, as well as senior stakeholders, able to establish effective and collaborative relations across BBC departments, and external agencies/stakeholders where required
* Act as the conduit to effective communication and influence across the management team
* A deep functional/technical expert with broad and comprehensive understanding of theories, systems and practices relevant to their functional area
* Broad and comprehensive understanding of all BBC regulatory and contractual obligations as they pertain to their functional area
* Excellent commercial and financial acumen, including experience of leading high-value regulated procurements
