Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Principal Systems Engineer will lead, empower, and motivate a growing team of Systems Engineers and Verification & Test Engineers. This role spans from concept to customer commissioning and field trials, ensuring on-time delivery within budget and to specification through best-practice systems engineering. The role involves close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, team leaders, project managers, manufacturing, service, and customer representatives. Main Responsibilities Lead systems engineering activities across applicable projects. Develop and implement a systems engineering strategy compliant with ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2023 (“Systems and software engineering – system life cycle processes”). Advocate and lead the adoption of best-practice systems engineering, consistent with INCOSE Handbook (ver. 5), to enhance engineering function delivery. Align compliance work with ISO 15288:2023 to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) maturity levels. Manage systems engineering budgets for people and financial resources, contributing to future forecasting. Lead elicitation and delivery of requirements from stakeholder to product level, establish functional and logical diagramming, and develop validation and verification plans. Manage and lead systems engineering teams, ensuring cohesive collaboration, guiding projects through milestones to completion using SMART objectives, and conducting regular 1:1s with direct reports. Provide expert advice and support training and development of engineers through formal and informal mentoring to build future systems engineers. Experience & Skills Systems Engineering Degree (Bachelor’s, Essential; Master’s, Desirable) or demonstrable equivalent. Chartered Engineer registered or working towards. Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) qualification. Extensive experience in practical application of best-practice systems engineering in a related engineering industry. Practical experience implementing a systems engineering approach into a business. Experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring systems engineers from internal non-systems engineering talent pools and external experienced hires. Experience tutoring or instructing best-practice systems engineering. Excellent influencing and negotiation skills across multiple organisational levels. Clear leadership behaviours, with the ability to take ownership and lead without direct authority. High integrity and accountability with a results-driven mindset, setting standards and holding others accountable. Project and budget management skills. Experience effectively coaching others. Ability to teach best-practice systems engineering and transfer knowledge from awareness to fundamentals to build a talent pool of systems engineers.
