Specialty Doctor - Oncology
Job overview
The appointee will be lead oncologist for Colorectal cancers and share the responsibility for the management and treatment of Cancers of Unknown Primary (CUP). The appointee will be expected to maintain and enhance the multidisciplinary management of patients with these malignancies, to increase entry of patients into clinical trials and to expand the service as required to meet patient's needs.
Main duties of the job
1. To be a key member of the oncology team with a clear role in ensuring comprehensive care for inpatients and providing cover for the acute oncology service.
2. To develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
3. Ward based care of inpatients on specialty wards, under the supervision of specialty consultants.
4. To assist the oncology consultants in clinic reviewing patients on chemotherapy.
5. Provide clinical supervision of junior doctors on medical wards and/or in the on-call team.
6. To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
7. To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
8. To be able to perform emergency procedures, such as lumbar puncture, ascitic drain and chest drains. Training can be provided around procedural competencies.
9. To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
Person specification
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* MRCP (UK) Part 1 and Part 2 or equivalent experience.
* Advanced Life Support (ALS) or be in the process of acquiring within a grace period of starting.
Experience
* Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council.
* Achieved the competences equivalent to that of a trainee who has completed UK foundation, ST1 and ST2 training or equivalent experience.
* Management of medical admissions at ST3+ level.
* Advanced procedural competences, such as chest drains, ascitic drains and lumbar punctures.
* Evidence of supervision or training of junior doctors.
* Minimum of 1 year of UK experience.
Additional Experience
* Minimum of 4 years post-registration experience with at least 2 years of Oncology Department experience.
* Experience in acute and general medicine at ST2 or equivalent level for at least 12 months.
