Job Purpose
BBC Yorkshire is looking for a self-starting journalist to work in its multimedia newsroom in Leeds. Yorkshire is a very busy news patch and we are looking to recruit a journalist who can make the important regional stories come to life. We require a journalist who understands what makes a leading story and the tenacity to ensure it is brought to air.
This is primarily a TV production role but we would like someone who is comfortable working across all platforms, including our social media and online output.
Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities
Our journalists research, write and often film stories for our breakfast, lunchtime and the flagship 18.30 programme. You’ll work alongside correspondents and reporters producing items as well as filming and producing items and bulletins independently. You will also contribute to our social media accounts and online.
With its diverse communities, rural landscape and urban deprivation, we want to recruit a journalist who can reflect the audiences we serve. You need to understand what matters to the different communities which make up Look North’s audience – from big cities like Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford, to rural residents on the coasts and in the national parks of North Yorkshire – as well as those who follow us on Facebook, X and Instagram.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
You will be based in Leeds but may be asked on occasions to work in the field from Chesterfield to Scarborough or at our other bases in Sheffield and York. You will spend time working in an office and working remotely according to business need.
The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:
* Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques.
* Some experience of working in TV news. This could be additional multimedia work carried out by a candidate from Radio/Online teams.
* Evidence of using editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
* Some understanding of the Yorkshire TV region.
* Good writing skills – the ability to write creatively in an engaging manner.
Please note, you will be expected to work at weekends as well as late shifts as part of the role advertised.
About The BBC
The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
