Job Summary
We currently have vacancies for Theatre Support Assistants within our Operating Theatres at New Cross Hospital. It is essential that the right candidate should be a team player with excellent communication skills and a desire to deliver high quality care to our patients. Successful candidates will also be required to have a flexible approach to working patterns.
Main duties of the job
Participate in delivering individualised care to patients under the direction of registered theatre practitioners. Ensure the maintenance of confidentiality and the privacy and dignity of patients at all times.
To feedback information gathered from patient interaction and report to a Theatre Practitioner.
The cleaning and preparation of the Operating Theatre, associated areas and equipment, the Anaesthetic rooms and the recovery areas inclusive of patient trolleys.
Transport patients between Wards and Theatre, within the Theatre complex, assisting with transferring patients to and from the operating table and help position them for surgical procedures under supervision of the registered Theatre Practitioner.
Participating in circulating duties during surgical procedures, checking of stock levels of sterile and non-sterile items and assisting under supervision with the application of patient monitoring and electro-surgical equipment. Assisting Registered Theatre Practitioners in the care of the patient during the pre, intra and post-operative episodes.
Maintaining stock levels of medical gas cylinders, receiving and checking of stores and CSSD items, ensuring adequate levels of theatre linen and theatre disposables/consumables.
Maintaining accurate records of all relevant theatre documentation under the supervision of a Registered Theatre Practitioner.
Assisting in stock taking, inventories and stock control.
Collection and delivery of items from pharmacy, specimens, blood boxes and other courier work if necessary.
Undertaking instrument processing in the emergency situation with bench top sterilisers.
Undertake reception duties as and when required.
Remove soiled linen, theatre clinical waste, black bag and cardboard rubbish from Operating Theatres to collection points ensuring conformity with the Trust/Theatre Waste Policy.
Respond to telephone calls and take messages as required in line with Theatre Policy.
To comply with Health & Safety Fire Regulations and report accidents/untoward incidents/hazards to the person in charge of the Department immediately, in accordance with agreed Procedures/Practices.
To be familiar with and comply with all Trust/Theatre Policies, Practices and Procedures.
Attend such courses/lectures in services training required by the needs of the service and own professional development, as identified by the person in charge.
Assist the trained staff in teaching/assessing newly appointed staff.
To take part in an annual appraisal.
To be flexible to meet the needs of the service including covering for sickness and working in other specialities as the service requires.
To undertake any other duties that are required, commensurate with the post and grade and have been discussed with the post holder.
