Job overview
University Hospitals Dorset are looking for an Ultrasound Assistant within the Maternity Ultrasound Department. With the merging of Maternity services across East Dorset, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a friendly and welcoming assistant. You will be the first person our patients encounter when they attend the department. You will need excellent customer service skills as well as admin and IT skills.
Main duties of the job:
1. To greet patients arriving in the department, book patients in for appointments, enter patients’ details onto IT systems, and direct patients where to go within the department.
2. To perform height and weight measurements on some of our patients.
3. To check the PACS system to ensure patients' images are stored on completion of their examination.
4. To answer phones, sometimes directing calls to other staff through the phone system, book appointments, and answer queries from patients and other staff.
5. To assist the Sonographers in their duties and chaperone intimate examinations.
6. To ensure there are adequate levels of stock within the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
1. To provide a reception service for appointed and ad hoc patients into the Department ensuring correct patient details, collating relevant documentation for examination whilst maintaining confidentiality.
2. To provide an efficient, friendly, confidential, and caring booking, advice, and information service to patients regarding their specific appointment and procedure requirements.
3. To liaise with patients, clinical staff, and medical staff both within and outside the Trust to ensure patients are examined within the nationally agreed waiting time targets.
4. To assist the Radiology Team in the delivery of the Diagnostic Services in line with nationally agreed waiting time targets.
5. To care for the needs of patients before, during, and after their examination within the ultrasound departments, respecting their dignity and ensuring the patient leaves safely.
6. To undertake any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by mutual consent in accordance with Trust Policy.
Person specification:
Education:
1. Essential criteria: General Education to GCSE
2. Desirable criteria: NVQ 3 or equivalent experience in this, or a similar role; Basic keyboard/typing qualification.
Experience:
1. Essential criteria: Previous work with the public.
2. Desirable criteria: Previous care work; Previous clerical role.
Technical skills:
1. Essential criteria: Good communication skills; Basic keyboard/typing experience; Ability to work within a team; Good personal time management.
Knowledge:
1. Essential criteria: Awareness of patient confidentiality issues and data protection.
2. Desirable criteria: Radiology Management System; Knowledge of an Electronic Patient record System.
