The Emerging Specialties department, within the Respiratory and Immunology Biology Unit, at GSK comprises a multidisciplinary team that utilises deep scientific knowledge and technical capabilities to undertake drug discovery efforts in support of emerging targets and disease areas of interest.
An exciting opportunity is available for a highly motivated scientist to fill a combined Research Scientist/Safety Representative position within the Flex group of Emerging Specialties, at Stevenage. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and execution of studies in disease-relevant cellular model systems for target validation and compound profiling studies. The scientist will deploy these model systems, perturb them with genetic and molecular tools and analyse and interpret the output of these studies. This scientist will have the opportunity to work on projects across multiple therapeutic areas, and will work closely with other scientists working in this field at GSK. The scientist will need a strong background in both cell culture and broader cell biology techniques.
The successful candidate has excellent communication and organisational skills, enthusiastic, self-motivated with a passion for learning. We are looking for someone with a desire to develop career in a role combining compliance and safety with making a significant contribution to scientific projects through the design and execution of experimental work.
The Respiratory and Immunology Biology Unit (RIBU) was formed to perform the biological research required to progress targets from target validation through clinical candidate selection and life cycle management to create future pipeline value in Respiratory, Immunology, and Emerging Areas of Science. The business unit is therapeutically broad and serves patients across a wide range of diseases including Immuno-mediated Diseases, Respiratory Diseases, Neurodegenerative Diseases, Neuropathic Pain, Liver Diseases and Kidney Diseases. We consider candidates on Grade 8 or 7 depending on the experience.

In this role you will
* Work on optimisation and implementation of primary and stem cell culture techniques to expand the capabilities of the department.
* Deploy physiological and/or disease-relevant cellular models and assays based on these cell culture systems and apply them to support ongoing target validation and compound profiling efforts.
* Co-ordinate and support laboratory safety activities across the Respiratory and Immunology Biology Unit.
* Work in a matrix team environment to enable delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard.
* Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, standards and training, and safety

Basic Qualifications & Skills:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
* BSc, MSc or equivalent with relevant field experience in cellular biology, biomedical science or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated expertise in cell culture techniques.
* Demonstrated expertise in deploying cellular and/or biochemical modelling to expedite target validation and/or compound profiling.
* Experience co-ordinating and/or supporting compliance with safety and legal regulations in a lab-based environment.
* Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following techniques: western blotting, immunoassays (e.g. ELISA, MSD), high content imaging, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, radioligand binding studies, electrophysiology, qPCR, genome editing or DNA/RNA sequencing.
* Knowledge of pharmacological principles and the ability to interpret the effects of drugs in complex cellular assay systems.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
* Experience in culture and differentiation of stem cells (e.g. iPSCs, MSCs) and/or primary cells. Experience in use of human biological samples.
* Experience in use of neuronal, bone or cartilage cellular models
* Experience of experimental work within an industrial setting.
* Experience of working in two or more disease areas (e.g., respiratory, immunology, neurology, metabolic)
* Demonstrated expertise in use of relevant data analysis platforms (e.g. GraphPad Prism, FlowJo, Columbus etc.)
* Experience of leading compliance with safety and legal regulations in an industrial setting.
