Job summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Band 8a Lead Biomedical Scientist to join our Automated Clinical Chemistry laboratory at Northern General Hospital. This is a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic and skilled professional to take a leadership role in driving excellence within our laboratory operations.
While the primary base for this role will be Northern General Hospital, there may be a requirement to provide cover and support at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital when needed.

Main duties of the job
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Expert Knowledge and Leadership: Provide expert knowledge of the local Biochemistry service, acting as the senior subject matter specialist.
2. Effective Management: Manage day-to-day operations of the Blood Sciences Biochemistry Laboratory Service, ensuring efficient service delivery.
3. Procedure and Technique Assessment: Regularly assess and update Biochemistry procedures and techniques according to new guidelines and demands.
4. Service Development Collaboration: Work with leaders to develop and deliver a cohesive Blood Sciences service and SYBP Biochemistry strategy.
5. Quality Service Delivery: Oversee analytical activities to ensure a timely, high-quality service.
6. Staff Management and Development: Implement delegation schemes, ensuring staff understand their roles and engage in professional development.
7. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the Biochemistry service complies with regulatory standards and maintains an effective quality management system.
8. Complaint and Incident Management: Investigate and resolve complaints, litigation issues, and adverse incidents, sharing learning across the network.
9. Equipment and Safety Management: Ensure proper management of analytical equipment and adherence to health and safety regulations.
10. Strategic Planning and Communication: Collaborate on policy development, produce reports, assist in business case preparation, and ensure appropriate staff cover, including out-of-hours support.

Education and Qualification
Essential
1. Relevant BSc Degree
2. FIBMS (Blood Science) or MSc (in Blood Science discipline or equivalent) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Blood Science) or Post Graduate Diploma or Demonstrable Experience
3. Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist.
4. Leadership / Management qualification or post graduate diploma, or equivalent experience.
Experience
Essential
1. Experience of managing at a senior level in an Integrated Blood Sciences department
2. Proven knowledge and experience of a range of highly specialised analytical laboratory techniques.
3. Experience in routine Human Resource issues including, engagement, communication, leadership and management.
4. Experience of laboratory IT systems and a thorough understanding of departmental systems management.
5. Experience of managing risk within a Pathology service.
6. Experience of quality management systems and processes.
7. Experience of service and policy development.
Desirable
1. Experience of budget management.
2. Experience of leading service improvements.
3. Experience of developing and delivering business plans and business development cases.
4. Experience of the clinical governance agenda including clinical risk and safety.
5. Experience of workforce planning and recruitment and retention strategies.

1. Relevant scientific knowledge appropriate to Blood Sciences.
2. Knowledge of the relevant standards, legislation, national and local policies and accreditation requirements relating to all aspects of service.
3. Able to communicate complex, sensitive, contentious or emotive information to individuals or groups in a clear and concise manner.
4. Analytical and judgemental skills in evaluating complex ranges of issues including but not limited to Quality, Service Development, Organisational and Staffing Issues.
5. Excellent time management skills with the ability to deal with a number of conflicting priorities in a calm and professional manner working to demanding timescales.
6. Ability to anticipate problems, appraise risks and make effective decisions.
7. Knowledge of health and safety and procedures for dealing with hazards and emergency situations (COSHH legislation, fire regulations, infectious, chemical and radioactive materials, data protection, risk assessment).
8. Strong analytical skills; literacy, IT and numeracy skills with the ability to produce and deliver a range of documents or presentations for a wide variety of audiences.
