Provision of a quality evidence based service forHerefordshire and Worcestershire National Health Service Breast ScreeningProgram (NHSBSP) and Symptomatic Services within the Trust. To undertakemammography and participate in Assessment clinics involving specialisedradiographic techniques. To ensure that patients/clients are professionallycared for during the examination in Radiology departments, assessment clinicsand on mobile screening units. To ensure clients /patients have confidence inthe service and can make informed choices to promote their health. To utilisehighly developed communication skills to assess the emotional needs of clientsand patients and respond accordingly. To work as part of a multidisciplinaryteam using initiative to ensure clinics run effectively to deliver a qualityservice and that the clinical needs of the client/patient are met. To actively participate,and adhere to the quality standards of the NHSBSP, contributing to improvingprotocols and procedures for service improvement.
Main duties of the job
Towork as a mammographer to a high professional standard producing qualitymammograms while adhering to time constraints and ensuring a positiveexperience for the client to encourage re attendance.
Toundertake complex and highly specialised techniques including the use ofstereotactic equipment for wire localisations, core biopsy and VABs.
Checkingpatients/clients details prior to examination and ensuring that such detailsare present and correct on the request form/computer. Requests must bejustified, as per departmental protocol and as per statutory regulations,Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R).
Ensuresthat all mammography and ultrasound images are properly labelled with patientsname, side examined, and date of examination and coded if appropriate. To enterinformation of the examination into the Radiology Computer System/NationalBreast Screening Service(NBSS).
Havea flexible attitude towards the hours of work and participate in work andduties as required within the directorate.
To reportand document any accidents/incidents to a senior member of staff.
Takesdelegated responsibility whilst working on mobile units for the relevantlegislation relating to Health and Safety, Ionising Radiation Regulations, FireProcedure and procedures for ceasing screening when equipment fails to performto quality and/or safety standards.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Clinical and Service Provision:
Towork as a trainee mammographer / mammographer to a high professional standard producing qualitymammograms while adhering to time constraints and ensuring a positiveexperience for the client to encourage re attendance.
During and/or following training:
Toundertake complex and highly specialised techniques including the use ofstereotactic equipment for wire localisations, core biopsy and VABs.
Participatein Multi-Disciplinary Assessment Meeting to determine patient pathways throughclinic.
Tocommunicate effectively with clients and patients to ensure they understand thescreening or symptomatic pathway.
Utilisemedical and radiographic knowledge to assess the ability of the client/patientto comply with the examination and adapt technique if required.
Checkingpatients/clients details prior to examination and ensuring that such detailsare present and correct on the request form/computer. Requests must bejustified, as per departmental protocol and as per statutory regulations,Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) and theradiographer must use their professional judgement to refuse inappropriaterequests.
Elicitrelevant clinical history and gain consent prior to examination.
Maintainup to date knowledge of breast disease and other issues relating to women's healthincluding Hormone Replacement Therapy. Able to provide specialist, in depthinformation and support. Supplies relevant health promotion information andanswers general health queries, referring to General Practitioner on otherhealth issues if necessary.
Ensuresthat all mammography and ultrasound images are properly labelled with patientsname, side examined, and date of examination and coded if appropriate. To enterinformation of the examination into the Radiology Computer System/NationalBreast Screening Service(NBSS).
Ensuresthat radiation safety measures are being observed within the limits of theprocedure being carried out and that own standard of Radiation Protection is inaccordance with the "Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017". IR (ME)R2017 and any other relevant legislation.
Ensuringthat, on completion of examination, the patient/client is informed how theywill get their results and when they may leave; arrangements are to be made fortransport if necessary.
Tocare for the patients in the department especially in their ownarea ofwork. To communicate to patients any delays likely to affect them, and withinthe standards set by the HCPC to describe examination findings, if appropriate.Occasionally communicating unwelcome news to patients within the clinicenvironment.
Whenrequired to advise on patient preparation and/or seek advice as appropriate.
Tobe responsible for own workflow (including out of hours and lone working)within the designated area ensuring that clinical requests are acted upon asappropriate and that a good throughput of patient examinations is achieved.
Havea flexible attitude towards the hours of work and participate in work andduties as required within the directorate.
Maintainown area of work in a clean and tidy condition.
Totake appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients and others. To reportand document any accidents/incidents to a senior member of staff.
Ensuresthe mobile screening van is maintained as a suitable environment for staff andclients by checking for and reporting any external damage prior to daily use.
Takesdelegated responsibility whilst working on mobile units for the relevantlegislation relating to Health and Safety, Ionising Radiation Regulations, FireProcedure and procedures for ceasing screening when equipment fails to performto quality and/or safety standards.
Ensuresthe unit is correctly packed and secured for transportation when applicable.
Quality
Has understanding of NHSBSP guidelines and quality standards andensures these are upheld.
Monitorsquality of Radiographic technique to ensure less than of clients arerecalled for repeat examination.
Participatesin peer review of images and works with colleagues to identify problems andtrends.
Undertakesdaily, weekly and monthly performance monitoring tests on equipment to ensureoptimal technical quality of images.
Hasunderpinning knowledge to interpret Quality Assurance test results and knowwhen and how to take remedial action.
Toparticipate in Medical/Clinical Audit of examinations.
