Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School is seeking to appoint an outstanding subject leader of physics. We welcome applications from talented individuals who will be dedicated to both the implementation of the school’s vision and the development of our physics department.
This role requires someone with the passion and subject expertise to develop and promote physics inside and outside of the classroom. They may either currently be leading a physics department or ambitious to develop their career further and lead one for the first time. The successful candidate must be an outstanding teacher, passionate about the importance of all areas of physics, and in possession of a strong understanding of pedagogy and curriculum design. They will have experience of teaching from KS3 to A Level, a record of achieving outstanding results and of commitment to, and delivery of, a high quality super-curricular offer.
At our school, most students sit separate GCSE exams in the three sciences, with a smaller number of students sitting Trilogy science. Students are currently taught general science in six groups in Year 7 and 8, splitting into individual science groups in Year 9, and then in eight groups from Year 10. At A Level, we currently have nearly 60 physics students across Years 12-13, with a further 230 studying biology and/or chemistry.
In our sixth form, physics is an extremely important subject. It is one of our fastest growing courses, with many students continuing their studies at university. Our super-curricular offer is an integral part of this growth. Projects include/have included the highly successful Iris/Cern at school project, ‘Death by Space Dust’ in collaboration with the University of Kent, and our research into the radioactive properties of tea won the “Bright Sparks” Award in the investigation category; with our students carrying out guided and independent research before presenting their work to peers and an academic audience either virtually or at university-based conferences. We are part of the Orbyts research partnership, currently working with UCL. This commitment to student-led research is widely recognised and an area in which we would expect you to take a lead and innovate.
Our science department is housed in nine new laboratories across one floor, with a large central prep room. The science department currently comprises 13 teachers, four of whom are physics specialists, and is supported by three technicians. There is an overall faculty lead for science as well as subject leaders for biology, chemistry, and physics.
This is an exciting, rarely available opportunity to lead a thriving department of dedicated teachers in a school full of ambitious, confident, independent, and creative young people.
The successful candidate will be offered a full programme of personal professional development and support as they continue in their career, alongside a comprehensive induction programme.
