Do you enjoy Science and have a real passion for the environment? If so, we have a really interesting position for a Lead Scientist to join our Science team, within our Water Treatment facility here at Hinkley Point C!
What you'll do
You will be supporting the business to ensure final effluent quality is compliant with regulatory standards by monitoring performance of both wastewater and surface water treatment processes. Working proactively and collaboratively to develop measures to address current and future risks. Offering technical guidance and recommendations for reactive events and investigating the root causes to prevent reoccurrence. Managing the client relationship and preparing the business for future permit changes. The Senior Process Scientist manages two Scientific Analysts and two Environmental Samplers.
You will also be responsible for:
* Accountable for providing technical advice on sewage treatment, surface water treatment, and environmental compliance.
* Proactively responding to treatment process issues, identifying and completing mitigating actions, and collaborating with the operational teams to prevent future occurrences.
* Identifying, supporting, and delivering training for on-site testing and process knowledge development.
* Report writing for submission to the Client.
* Undertaking regular client liaison meetings to ensure all stakeholders are informed of ongoing treatment performance and challenges.
* Regularly reviewing actions using the project's HS&E reporting tool.
* Optimisation of site processes, such as chemical dosing, sludge dewatering, and power consumption.
* Reviewing and approving data reports on a weekly and monthly basis for submission to the client, and regularly updating the management plans and procedures, performing monthly inspections.
* Engaging with operations teams, contractors and other scientists, driving collaboration and improving technical understanding through mentoring and coaching.
* Collaborating with the SHEQ Team to write risk assessments and RAMS.
* Ensuring permit compliance is maintained across the treatment processes, including effluent quality monitoring and data reporting.
* Playing a key role in achieving relevant monthly KPIs and HSEPIs.
* Organising sampling and monitoring programs to ensure monitoring requirements are met.
* Fostering a collaborative approach across departments and with the client and external stakeholders.
* Collaborating with other site contractors to mitigate against pollution of the surface water network and treatment processes.
* Liaising with laboratories to deliver testing of water, sewage, and materials in line with SLAs.
* Managing COSHH for treatment and undertaking chemical dosing trials and jar testing to optimise treatment processes.
* Preparing for Water Management Committee meetings and Final meetings.
* Daily Insight action review and triaging the Insight actions.
* CEMAR- Early Warning reporting.
* Pre-start brief Science Team, Tool box talks, Safety messages, Team bonus scores.
* Producing Monthly Environmental Managers Meeting slides.
* Collating and storing data reports, service/maintenance records, and calibration documents.
* Issuing and managing the permits to discharge system alongside the Scientific Analysts for contractors across site.
What you'll need
Essential:
* Excellent Technical / Process knowledge – Sewage and construction wastewater treatment.
* A relevant science or engineering degree, or demonstrable experience and expertise of sewage treatment processes.
* Have previously worked in a scientific role on sewerage treatment works (at least 3 yrs).
* Experience of collaborating with and influencing stakeholders effectively at all levels within the organisation.
* Experience of prioritising, planning, and delivering outputs within SLAs.
* The ability to analyse significant amounts of data from several sources and logically identify the underlying cause.
* Ability to interpret data trends and understand necessary actions.
* The ability to produce accurate reports for a range of stakeholders.
* Knowledge of environmental permitting and regulations.
* Good interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively influence the opinions of others and manage the team.
* Have a full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
* Recent experience of commissioning, plant optimisation and providing process support to operational teams.
* Experience in leading process investigations and reporting findings.
* Awareness of regulatory reporting and other compliance requirements.
* Experience in managing and leading a team of staff to achieve specified targets.
* An advanced level of Excel skills.
* Working towards or have attained membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g. CIWEM, IEMA).
