Are you passionate about creating sustainable travel solutions and promoting active lifestyles? HITRANS is seeking a dynamic and experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of the People & Place Programme across the Highlands & Islands region. This programme aims to shift travel habits away from private car use toward more sustainable travel options, including walking, cycling, and wheeling.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in managing and implementing various funding streams related to active travel, working closely with local communities, partners, and stakeholders to deliver impactful behaviour change activities. You will manage a diverse portfolio of projects, work with local authorities, national third-sector organisations, and other partners to help shape the future of sustainable transport in the region.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and coordinate the HITRANS People & Place programme, promoting active travel and sustainable transport.
Manage and implement local and national funding initiatives supporting walking, wheeling, and cycling.
Work collaboratively with local authorities, community organisations, NHS, universities, and transport operators.
Ensure the successful delivery of grant programmes and monitor the progress of behaviour change initiatives.
Oversee the planning and development of specific projects aimed at increasing participation in walking and cycling, improving access to sustainable transport, and creating safer community routes.
Monitor and evaluate the success of the People & Place programme, ensuring that measurable outcomes are achieved and communicated effectively.
Manage local behaviour change officers and work closely with partner organisations to deliver integrated active travel strategies.
Contribute to the development and implementation of the HITRANS Active Travel Masterplans and strategies.
We are looking for a candidate with excellent project management skills and a passion for sustainable transport. You should be experienced in managing complex programmes and working with diverse stakeholders. The role requires a proactive approach to managing funding, reporting on progress, and leading behaviour change activities within local communities. Ideal candidates will have strong communication and organisational skills, along with a solid understanding of active travel principles.
The role can be based anywhere within the HITRANS remit area (Highland, Orkney Islands, Moray, Western Isles, Argyll & Bute), and we are open to flexible working arrangements, including job share and reduced hours. HITRANS has offices in Lairg, Inverness, and Jura, but we are happy to consider other suitable locations based on your needs.
Main Duties Include:
Developing and delivering a detailed work plan with timelines, costs, and partner responsibilities.
Liaising with local and national partners, providing grant management, regular updates, and support.
Line management of local behaviour change officers and coordination with local authorities.
Monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on programme outcomes.
Managing key projects such as the Fort William Wayfinding project and Access to Bikes fund.
