The two brands sell through the Company's phd.com and scienceinsport.com digital platforms, third-party online sites, including Amazon, and extensive retail distribution in the UK and internationally.
In 2022 the company opened a state of the art 160,000 square foot manufacturing and logistics facility in Blackburn, Lancashire, providing a significant advantage in product costs and customer response time, allowing Science in Sport to maintain the highest standards of quality.
Science in Sport is Performance Solutions partner to Ineos Grenadiers cycling team, Tottenham Hotspur, New York City and OGC Nice football clubs, in addition to being the Official Nutrition Partner to the Milwaukee Bucks, 2021 National Basketball Association Champions and in 2023, winner of the women’s marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Gotytom Gebreslase.
The Role
The Health and Safety Lead is responsible for ensuring Science in Sport Groups Health and Safety (H&S) compliance by developing, implementing, and monitoring the H&S strategy, and effectively communicating and influencing senior management on H&S priorities and performance. Additionally, the role involves auditing high-risk areas, coaching employees and managers, and working closely with various departments to manage risks and ensure legal requirements are met.
The purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with Health and Safety Regulations, protect the workforce, and improve overall safety performance across the business. The Health and Safety Lead will conduct risk assessments, ensure compliance with regulations, train staff on safety procedures, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions.

The work - Your 4 most important responsibilities
* Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies & procedures including risk assessment, hazard control and incident response.
* Communication and reporting of performance to the senior management team and other key stakeholders including incident performance and proactive measures implementation.
* Coaching managers, training & employee safety education.
* Health and Safety Legislation Compliance.
Accountability – what you are responsible for delivering
* The Health and Safety strategy and performance of the business.
* Ensure that the business meets its legal requirements and where gaps are identified, there is a prioritised plan in place to resolve.
* Establish and enforce Health and Safety protocols based on regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, HACCP) and company policies to minimize risks in the manufacturing environment.
* Conduct and review risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the manufacturing process (e.g., machinery, chemicals, sanitation issues) and implement control measures to mitigate those risks.
* Coach managers and provide training to all employees on Health and Safety practices, including accident and incident response and investigation, food safety protocols, emergency response, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
* Ensure that the business complies with all Health and Safety regulations, conduct audits and report findings to the senior management team.
* Promptly respond to safety incidents, accidents, or near-miss events.
* Keep up with legislative changes and promote new practices which will improve performance.
* Liaise with external enforcement agencies where applicable and report incidents on behalf of the business e.g., RIDDOR.
* Work with the People Team to ensure that Health and Safety issues are well managed, and risks are reduced.

Specific metrics will be set when in role and will be reviewed and built upon regularly. Alongside this, you will be supported with a personal performance plan that will enable you to continue improving your own performance and impact.
Attributes – experience and mindset that will enable you to do well in this role.
* NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma or equivalent is preferable.
* Technical Member of IOSH preferable.
* Minimum of 2-5 years safety management experience preferably in food manufacturing.
* Experience of implementing safety management systems and investigating and learning from incidents.
* Understanding how a H&S culture is developed and implemented and able to put in place strategies to engage others in our H&S journey.
* The ability to spot potential hazards, non-compliances, and areas for improvement in safety protocols.
* The ability to lead by example, build a safety-first culture, and influence all levels of the organisation to prioritise Health and Safety.
* A proactive and analytical approach to resolving safety challenges, particularly when responding to incidents or designing preventive measures.
* The ability to remain composed in high-stress or emergency situations, such as serious workplace accidents, equipment malfunctions, or contamination outbreaks.
* Upholding honesty, transparency, and ethical responsibility in reporting safety issues.
* Working closely with other departments (e.g. production, quality control, maintenance) to integrate Health and Safety practices into all operations.
* Staying adaptable to new regulations, technologies, and safety practices, and being committed to continuous professional development.
