An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Stop Smoking Advisors Practitioners to join our expanding team. Hillingdon Stop Smoking Service is committed to providing accessible, evidenced based services that treat tobacco dependence, effectively helping smokers to stop smoking, reduce smoking health harms and inequality and ensure residents stay healthy, giving children the best start in life.
The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) is preparing to make a new contribution to making England a ‘Smoke free society’, by 2030 and sets out the Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health with several recommendations for the Tobacco Control Plan. In addition, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NCE) Guidance NG209 also sets out what is required of stop smoking interventions including the provision of behavioural and licensed products such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
The post holder will contribute to supporting people within the borough, who want to stop smoking or using tobacco, contributing to the reduction of smoking rates thus improve the health of the local population, reduce smoking related ill health, disability and preventable death and reduce health inequalities. These posts will be specialised to working with service user who may be experiencing mental health problems providing specialist support and treatment to support them to stop smoking and maximise positive health outcomes.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide smoking cessation advice and support through established groups, one to one and telephone interventions in maternity/Acute medical Unit setting and community settings.
2. To provide smoking cessation interventions in line with the evidence base and to agreed National standards.
3. Utilise motivational techniques, assess client’s motivation to quit smoking and maintain relationships with the client group to support smoking cessation.
4. Develop an action plan with the client and discuss the use of appropriate pharmacological support suitable to them.
5. Extensive relevant knowledge of evidence-based information on smoking cessation approaches and methods.
6. Attend bespoke training events as required for career and continuous professional development.

Our Drug and Alcohol services include community services, and the National Gambling Service and a Club Drug Clinic. In addition, we provide smoking cessation services in Hillingdon and Camden & Islington.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
The post holder will:
1. Provide smoking cessation advice and support through established groups, one to one and telephone interventions within the maternity and acute medical unit within Hillingdon Hospital.
2. Provide smoking cessation interventions in line with the evidence base and to agreed National standards.
3. Utilise motivational techniques, assess client’s motivation to quit smoking and maintain relationships with the client group to support smoking cessation.
4. Develop an action plan with the client and discuss the use of appropriate pharmacological support suitable to them.
5. Extensive relevant knowledge of evidence-based information on smoking cessation approaches and methods.
6. Attend bespoke training events as required for career and continuous professional development.
7. Extensive knowledge of health-related behaviour change evidence.
8. Responsible for continuous learning knowledge of smoking cessation using the NCSCT online training packages.
9. Comply with statutory and mandatory requirements in line with CNWL policy.
10. Review own practice in comparison to others to ensure continual improvement is developed and maintained within the team.
11. Assess client’s motivation to quit to determine best course of action in their quit attempt.
12. Review personal objectives to ensure that they are effectively met in accordance with service work-plan.
13. Ensure that service delivery is maintained and suggest contingency plans for clinic delivery for any planned absence.
14. Lead and participate in regular reviews of service provision including venues, frequency and timing to ensure the needs of the client’s needs are met.
Person specification
Qualifications /Experience
Essential criteria
1. A good level of general education to include O Level or GCSE standard for English and Math’s or equivalent.
2. Completed the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT) or level 2 Smoking Cessation training.
Desirable criteria
1. Additional modules of smoking cessation training via NCSCT for specialist priority groups.
Experience
Essential criteria
1. Experienced in providing a range of evidenced based behavioural change interventions.
2. Experience of and knowledge of Nicotine Replacement Therapy.
3. Experience of providing Motivational Enhancement Therapy.
4. Experience of promoting health & wellbeing sessions.
Desirable criteria
1. Experience of working in addictions services and working with client group.
2. Experience of working in an acute setting.
3. Experience of audit and service user satisfaction feedback and analysis.
4. Experience and an understanding of the role of service users and promoting the ‘experts by experience ‘model of service provision.
Skills and knowledge
Essential criteria
1. Ability to develop a therapeutic rapport with SUs.
2. Ability to work flexibly within this setting.
3. Experience of working with partner agencies and communicating clinical information to ensure positive outcomes for service users.
4. Experience of promoting health & wellbeing sessions.
Desirable criteria
1. Good understanding of local and national policies relating to Stop Smoking Service provision – NHS Long Term Plan.
