We are seeking: a forward-thinking, customer-focused Customer Engineering Manager to lead a dynamic team and ensure the successful delivery of projects that exceed customer expectations.
The Role
As a Customer Engineering Manager, you will oversee all customer-focused engineering activities, driving project success, customer satisfaction, and technical excellence. Based in their Birmingham location, you will lead a team of customer application engineers, technical authors, and reliability engineers to deliver innovative solutions while maintaining the reliability of the product range.
Key Responsibilities
1. Serve as the escalation technical contact for customers, addressing engineering-related concerns.
2. Build and maintain strong relationships with customer stakeholders at all levels.
3. Facilitate regular communication and status updates on project progress, internally and externally.
4. Travel occasionally (UK, Europe, and North America) to strengthen customer relationships.
5. Oversee customer-focused engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery, quality standards, and budget compliance.
6. Define project scope, risks, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with internal teams and customers.
7. Resolve technical challenges and drive risk mitigation strategies.
8. Collaborate with programme managers to embed best project management practices into the team.
9. Lead and mentor cross-functional engineering teams to deliver effective customer solutions.
10. Incorporate learning from aftermarket/service support into product development.
11. Conduct performance reviews and provide guidance to foster professional growth.
12. Collaborate with advanced product, design, test, quality, manufacturing, and service teams to meet customer needs.
13. Ensure solutions meet safety, performance, and regulatory standards.
14. Drive innovation and process improvements to enhance customer satisfaction and product efficiency.
Customer Communication
1. Present technical solutions and proposals to customers in a clear, professional manner. Negotiate effectively to maintain alignment with standard products and avoid unnecessary changes.
2. Prepare regular updates on project progress and customer feedback for senior management.
Required Skills and Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, or related field) or equivalent experience.
2. 7+ years of engineering experience, including at least 3 years in customer-facing or management roles.
3. Strong knowledge of engineering principles, product development, and project management.
4. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders.
5. Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience in the automotive, rail, or energy storage industries.
2. Understanding of integrating subsystems into complete vehicle/product designs.
3. Familiarity with thermal management or HVAC design.
