Job summary This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technician to apply their skills to benefit NHS service users across South Wales as part of a team designing and manufacturing bespoke assistive devices. We would also welcome applications from those with less experience keen to develop their career within an innovative and forward-thinking department. The Cardiff Rehabilitation Engineering Unit (REU) delivers a range of specialised clinical services, in particular, the assessment of people's needs and the prescription and provision of bespoke assistive technology to meet those needs. The Unit supports an active research, development and innovation programme in partnership with local universities and private companies and has a very supportive approach to both the personal and the continuing professional development of staff. As part of the Cardiff REU's Design & Manufacture Team, the post-holder will work as part of a team carrying a routine service commitment alongside the Posture and Mobility Service providing clinical engineering solutions to meet the complex needs of people with long term conditions, in particular, specialist wheelchairs and bespoke accessories. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. Main duties of the job For the most part, the post-holder will fabricate, maintain, repair and decommission specialised equipment to meet the complex needs of severely disabled patients/service users. This work will involve using a wide range of tools and fabrication techniques at the direction of the Design and Manufacture Team Leader to manufacture devices and components to written specification and/or technical drawings to meet individual patient needs. This will include working alongside patients, clinicians, and other members of the Design and Manufacture Team to design and document solutions within the framework of the department's quality system (ISO13485) and relevant legislation (i.e. the UK Medical Device Regulations). The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the prescription and provision (including development and evaluation) of specialist devices to meet the needs of individual patients/service users. The ideal candidate should have demonstrable practical skills in fabrication, assembly and servicing of devices, a sound knowledge of design and manufacture (including risk management) and experience of working with the public/patients. Appointment on Agenda for Change Annex 21 (that is, on a slightly reduced salary initially) will be considered for those with less experience for whom appropriate training will be provided for a fixed period to support development towards appointment on the substantive salary scale.
