Specialty Doctor Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery WSI Restorative Dentistry
Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor (formerly known as Staff Grade) position in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery based at The James Cook University Hospital, Teesside. This post joins a well-established team of 7 Consultants, 2 Specialist Registrars, 6 Specialty Doctors & 7 Dental Core Trainees.
The successful applicant should be experienced in all aspects of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and will be expected to work in a flexible and motivated fashion responding to the changing needs of the hospital team.
The post holders will be required to have suitable experience, have been on a Dental Core Trainee grade or higher for at least 2 years. The successful applicant will join a busy unit in providing a wide range of specialist treatments for patients requiring emergency and elective surgery. Duties will include outpatient clinics, day case operating lists and assessment of emergencies and ward referrals during working hours. There post holder should have a specialist interest in restorative dentistry to provide direct support to the Restorative Dentist 3 days a week. There is also a teaching element of the post.
The James Cook University Hospital is a Level one Major Trauma Centre covering a large population and the successful applicant will be expected to participate in the on call rota.
MFDS/FDS/MJDF or Surgical Dental specialist qualification is essential and GDC full registration is essential.
Main duties of the job
To provide a wide range of specialist treatments for patients requiring emergency and elective surgery. Duties will include outpatient clinics, day case operating lists, and assessment of emergencies and ward referrals during working hours.
1. Undertake any responsibility which relates to oral and maxillofacial surgery, both elective and emergency.
2. Cover for colleagues annual leave and other authorised absences.
3. Active involvement in audit.
4. Continuing professional development.
5. Any other duties which may be required.
6. Travel and attendance at peripheral units Friarage Hospital / North Tees General Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital.
Working for our organisation
This is a large and very active department providing a complete range of Oral and Maxillofacial services across Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire with a catchment population approaching million people. In particular there is provision of Head & Neck cancer surgery including microvascular and robotic surgery, Orthognathic surgery and other aspects of major Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The Middlesbrough Oral & Maxillofacial service also provides the major sub regional trauma service based in the Major Trauma Centre dealing with several hundred facial injuries a year.
The purpose built Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry Department at the James Cook University Hospital has recently been refurbished. Good computer facilities with an excellent Medical Illustration and Radiology department with conebeam CT all digital.
At the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton there are two single surgeries recently refurbished. Medical Illustration and Radiology are available on site with excellent dental nursing support. There is a large shared departmental junior staff office/ seminar room, nursing offices and a staff tea room.

7. BDS or equivalent primary dental qualification
8. Full registration UK General Dental Council

9. On GDC Specialist list for Oral Surgery
Experience
Essential criteria
10. Three years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration
11. Minimum 2 years experience as a resident SHO in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery including in-patient experience
12. Experience in dento-alveolar surgery and basic trauma management
Desirable criteria
13. Experience working in the NHS and in hospital dentistry
14. Advanced trauma management and other appropriate surgical skills
15. Capable of running ward rounds and making in-patient management decisions
16. Experience in sedation techniques
