Main Responsibilities
1. Act as the Business advisor for safety. Assist managers, supervisors, and individuals to meet various responsibilities for Health and Safety under relevant legislation.
2. Keep up to date with changes in current legislation and bring to the attention of the business any relevant new legislation and proposed changes to be implemented.
3. Attend courses/seminars run by external sources to enable accurate interpretation of legislation to enable implementation within the organization.
4. Assist in the development and maintenance of a suitable and sufficient OHSMS.
5. Prepare Health and Safety strategies, action plans and oversee the development of internal policies.
6. Ensure the health, safety and risk management systems are fully implemented across the site and are operated to the same standards as set by Huhtamaki.
7. Develop and maintain suitable processes for the investigation of accidents and near miss situations. Implement corrective actions with department heads.
8. Oversee recommendations arising from investigations are implemented in the business.
9. Participate in the investigation of accidents and near-misses and recommend remedial action to management where appropriate.
10. Ensure that all assessments and requirements under legislation are conducted and reviewed at relevant intervals and maintain records of the same.
11. Conduct health and safety inspections and prepare reports of all the company’s operations.
12. Immediately contact the relevant personnel responsible for health and safety if situations are found that require immediate rectification or stopping of any operation.
13. Propose suitable solutions to relevant personnel.
14. Ensure that Huhtamaki Belfast has a SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) for every manufacturing process and RA’s (Risk Assessments) are established as required under the Management of Health and Safety of Work Regulations 1999. Ensure Supervisors / Team Leaders / Operators / H&S Representatives have the relevant support and training to carry these out.
15. Establish, monitor and maintain a regular audit review process for all RA’s and SOP’s.
16. Work alongside the training specialist to carry out or arrange for all required internal and external training (e.g., manual handling) for all applicable employees.
17. Assist Managers and Team Leaders to carry out COSHH assessment for all hazardous substances used on site.
18. Work with the training specialist to monitor the effectiveness of the training programs in place. Identify any training gaps, implement plans to address gaps and evaluate training requirements for new equipment and processes.
19. Work with relevant Managers to ensure safety inspections are carried out in the workplace in the presence of safety representatives and other members of management as required.
20. Ensure accident reporting is maintained and conducted in line with Company policy and Group requirements.
21. Collate, report, and analyze data and statistics (e.g., near miss reports, accidents) to Group when required.
22. Ensure the Emergency evacuations procedures are tested at regular intervals.
23. Ensure noise surveys are carried out and analyze results, taking corrective action if necessary.
24. Maintain and monitor records of inspections by other relevant persons regarding standards documentation, for example, fire safety, building inspections, electrical inspections. Ensure that any statutory inspections relevant to H&S are carried out, even if arranged by others (e.g., maintenance).
25. Arrange and deliver monthly Health and Safety meetings.
26. Arrange and deliver quarterly First Aid and Fire Marshall meetings.
27. Oversee and manage potential and ongoing claims.
28. Be on call in case of a major incident on site.
29. Work closely with the Compliance and Environmental Manager on Environmental duties and obligations for the site that link closely with the Health and Safety function, providing cover to this role as and when required.

1. Have a good knowledge and understanding of the Company’s disciplinary and grievance procedures and provide supporting evidence where acting under these guidelines.
2. Adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act in respect of confidentiality and disclosure of personal data.
3. Be aware and adhere to all Company policies at all times.
4. Be aware of general responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Policy.
Essential Criteria
Experience & Education
1. Nebosh Diploma
2. 3-5 years Management Experience
3. Working knowledge of current legislation e.g., Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH
4. Experience working in a manufacturing/production environment with targets and objectives
5. GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or equivalent
