Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) is the leading global energy storage optimizer. Our mission is to deliver integrated energy solutions that build a resilient, intelligent, and flexible energy infrastructure - unlocking the way to an optimized renewable future. By integrating renewables, energy management technology, and storage with traditional energy resources, we reinvent clean energy production from the largest and most complex grids to the most remote and essential microgrids. We play a key role in Wärtsilä’s vision towards a 100% renewable energy future through flexibility, reliability, and integration and a more sustainable world for us all.
Preferred location for this position is Toronto, Ontario Canada. 10% travel is expected.
As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will have these responsibilities:
* Serve as the product lead engineer in coordinating design reviews and engineering change management activities.
* Schedule and track the activities of mechanical department team members as they maintain product designs, documentation, and bills of materials via the change management process.
* Report status on design efforts to department managers and project managers.
* Support external requests for assistance, either directly or by arranging help within the department, from sales, manufacturing, quality, field installation, and field maintenance organizations.
* Have systems level understanding for all aspects of the product beyond the mechanical/thermal portions (electrical, fire protection, site civil installation).
* Prepare and maintain requirements documents related to the product and subsystems.
* Execute some design/calculation tasks themselves as appropriate given particular expertise they may possess.
* Preferably have (or develop) CAD experience with Creo and Windchill to be able to find relevant documentation and design information quickly.
* Identify and offer solutions for design issues/risks and support driving implementation.
* Mentor others toward having a systems level appreciation for the product (especially interactions between subsystems).
To be successful in this role, we expect you to:
* Have strong understanding of systems design in the context of outdoor skid-packaged equipment made at volume production levels.
* Be a mechanical engineering generalist (structural/thermal/fluid flow) with an appreciation for the power electrical discipline and subject matter (for example, ability to read power/control electrical diagrams is a substantial benefit).
* Have strong communication skills to be able to gauge a given audience and explain technically complex ideas/concerns at the level appropriate.
* Exhibit strong organizational skills with an appreciation for scheduling and task management. Understanding of and direct experience with scheduling tools, the ability to break down projects into trackable subtasks of estimatable durations, and personal experience executing engineering design tasks is key.
* Exhibit collaborative leadership skills, helping team members understand and own their assigned tasks, take accountability for the quality of their work product, and agree and execute to achievable timelines.
* Be experienced working with configuration control / engineering change management and have a solid understanding of engineering documentation practices for a standardized product.
* Be practical, understanding the financial and schedule impacts of design decisions and particularly when a design is “good enough”.
* Be dedicated and committed to results in a dynamic environment where products are simultaneously being manufactured, installed, and maintained at sites globally.
* Possess experience with the design of outdoor skid-packaged equipment. Experience with enclosure/container design requirements, standards, manufacturing, and IP rating experience is beneficial.
* Understand varied manufacturing processes related to skid packaged equipment fabrication, for example structural and sheet metal construction/welding, painting, equipment bolting, and electrical assembly.
* Possess excellent written and verbal English and interpersonal skills.
* Be able to work with an international team with different backgrounds and in different time zones.
Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements:
Our ideal candidate will have:
* 7+ years technical experience including 3+ years product level discipline leadership experience in a commercial product development environment (preferably skid packaged equipment).
* Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or possibly Chemical Engineering). MSME is a plus.
