Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join our paediatric team working as a Clinical Fellow (ST1/2 equivalent) for 6 months, with the possibility of this being extended to 12 months following a discussion with both parties.
This post includes working on the neonatal unit and paediatric wards - balance can be discussed at interview. The post would suit a doctor considering a career in paediatrics who wishes to gain some experience prior to applying for run through training or for doctors considering careers in Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine or Surgery who wish to gain paediatric experience. No prior experience in paediatrics or neonatology is needed but a willingness to learn and the flexibility to work within our team is essential.
The post holder will work on the neonatal unit with ST1-3 grade doctors and ANNPs on a 1:9 full shift rota pattern depending on staffing needs and interests.
On the paediatric ward you will work with ST1-3 grade paediatric and GPVTS trainees on a 1:7 full shift rota.
There is an ST4+ grade and consultant present on both sides during the day and out of hours there is an ST4+ grade doctor covering both the neonatal unit and the paediatric wards and a consultant on each side. Opportunities to attend clinics are available.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide care for inpatients on Acorn and Oak wards under the supervision of the ST 4-8 grade registrar and consultant on service, including attending ward rounds, note keeping, arranging investigations and collating results.
2. To clerk, investigate and treat emergency and day case referrals on the Paediatric Assessment Unit under supervision of the registrar and consultant on service.
3. To attend outpatient clinics.
4. To participate fully in the departmental teaching and training programme.
5. To become familiar with local clinical policies, guidelines and protocols.
6. To be aware of and comply with the Trust's policies and procedures relating to Clinical Governance and Health & Safety at Work.
7. To provide cover for colleagues in their absence and deal with emergencies flexibly, as the occasion demands.
8. To provide neonatal care to infants on Somerset Neonatal Unit and postnatal wards under supervision of specialist registrars and neonatal consultants, including attending ward rounds, note keeping, performing practical procedures, arranging investigations and collating results.
9. To perform first day checks on the postnatal wards.
10. To attend newborn deliveries where a paediatrician is required.
11. To admit sick and premature newborns to the unit and initiate their management under supervision.
