Job Title: English Teacher Location: Whetstone, London N20 Job Type: Full-time, Permanent Salary: £39,000 - £49,000 Start Date: January 2025 (or soon thereafter) MLK Education Search are seeking to appoint an experienced English Teacher to join a leading co-educational school for young people aged 11-18 who have found previous schools overwhelming, and thrive in a smaller, more nurturing and therapeutic environment. This is a small school with big ambitions, a truly caring and collaborative culture, and eyes only on the education of the young people who require an alternative environment due to their mental health and social challenges. With class sizes limited to 8 and a maximum capacity of up to 70 students, this is a calm, flexible and supportive learning environment where students can study at their own pace. Each student has an additional need associated with social, emotional, and mental health. Most have an EHCP, generally related to self-exclusion, anxiety, depression, or self-harm, and require a calm environment in which to learn, as opposed to behaviours that challenge or school exclusions. The school maintains an academic approach that operates a High School model, accessing GCSEs and providing a BTEC option in Food Technology. Combined with therapeutic interventions anxieties are minimised, encouraging students to develop healthy, positive relationships. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in teaching National Curriculum English to Key Stage 4, preferably within a therapeutic SEN education setting (though not essential). It would be highly desirable to have a deep understanding of neurodiversity and experience working with children with SEMH and their families. Key Responsibilities: To plan, resource and deliver lessons and sequences of lessons to the highest standard that ensure real learning takes place and students make superior progress To provide a nurturing classroom which helps students to develop as learners To help to maintain/establish discipline and contribute towards effective working. To be a form tutor/key teacher and be the main contact for your key students. Ensure that all students achieve at least at the chronological age level or, if well below level, make significant and continuing progress towards achieving at the chronological age level Maintain regular and productive communication with pupils, parents and carers, to report on progress, sanctions and rewards and all other communications Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils Direct and supervise support staff assigned to lessons and when required participate in related recruitment and selection activities Experience and Qualifications: Qualified to degree level or above Be a qualified teacher with QTS in the UK Have a successful track record of raising standards and attainment in a similar environment Have a genuine passion for supporting young, neurodiverse people who experience challenges related to mental health Be confident, calm, and collaborative with the ability to communicate with staff, pupils, and families Be committed to ongoing professional development and training.
