Hill House seeks an enthusiastic, well qualified and committed person to lead the Junior School from September 2025 or April 2025. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead and develop further a thriving junior school with an excellent reputation within a highly successful whole school environment. The Junior School currently consists of 300 pupils of school age, plus a Nursery.
The School
Hill House is the leading co-educational, independent school in the area, situated on the borders of South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. It is an exciting and expanding school of some 850 children from age 3 to 18, where teachers can teach and children can learn. The school was founded in 1912 and occupies a splendid location between Bawtry and Doncaster.
The school has a stunning site, harmonising the history of an outstanding campus with new, purposely designed 21st century facilities. A recent multi-million pound development project has seen the building of a new Sixth Form Centre, Sports Grounds and Dining Hall. In November 2024, a new £3 million building was completed with Music and Art Schools, a Fitness Centre and a number of classrooms.
Academic results are the best in the area, with 57% of GCSEs being awarded grades 9 to 7 this year, and also 47% of A levels also being graded at A*/A. They compete very favourably with other independent schools; expectations are rightly high, and we are ambitious for our children. The school was graded as “outstanding” by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in 2022. The Senior School was named Independent Secondary School of the Year for 2025 by the Sunday Times.
The school is in a thriving and historic area with excellent communication links, around 90 minutes by train from London. The culture, facilities and shops of York, Leeds, Harrogate, Nottingham and Sheffield are all within easy reach, as is the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and the Peak District. The school is surrounded by many beautiful villages in the countryside.
The Junior School
The Junior School is situated in its own wing of the main building, with modern, purpose-built classrooms which are well equipped. It has its own hall and large playgrounds.
Junior School pupils access senior facilities including Science Labs, and share the Dining Hall and Sports Facilities with Senior School. Some classes are taught by senior school specialist teachers.
It has pupils from ages 3 to 11; the great majority of pupils transfer to the Senior School. There are 2 or 3 classes in each year group, normally consisting of up to 20 pupils per class.
The Position
The school is seeking an outstanding leader who will play a key part in shaping and implementing the whole school’s strategic development and be responsible for the day to day running of the Junior School. This senior role is a central figure of the School's Senior Management Team, responsible to the Headmaster. The Head of Junior School works closely with Governors, attending meetings of the Board and its sub committees.
The Head of Junior School is assisted by a Deputy Head and Heads of each Key Stage. The Head teaches a significantly reduced timetable.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven ability in senior or middle leadership, managing people and resources effectively, thinking strategically, delivering results and motivating others. They will possess commercial awareness, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with Governors and colleagues and will be able to inspire trust and confidence across all stakeholders.
This post commands an attractive remuneration package including some assistance with relocation if appropriate. Hill House provides a Company Pension Scheme and Westfield Health cover.
