The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Surgical Assessment unit also known as The Wilson unit is part of the trust Same Day Emergency Care pathway (SDEC). Same day emergency care (SDEC) is a service that provides emergency care to patients without the need for an admission to hospital. SDEC is one of the many ways the NHS is working to provide the right care in the right place for patients, to improve flow in the emergency department. The Surgical Assessment unit has a capacity of 6 chairs, 6 trollies and a waiting area with 3 chairs. We accept referrals from Urgent Care Centre (UCC), GP and Accident and Emergency department. We also get referrals from clinics and consultants. The four main specialities that are triaged and reviewed in SAU are General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology and Gynaecology. Some patients who require minor surgical procedures, i.e., incision and drainage of abscess, are looked after in SAU post-operatively and then discharged home following a period of close monitoring. We also review patients with complicated wound care and dressing requirements. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy Hot clinic is also run in SAU where patients presenting with Gall stones are reviewed and booked for surgery.
