About The Role Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) serves as the central hub for managing all shipping traffic entering the Ports of the Forth and Tay estuaries, functioning much like air traffic control but for ships. The vessels under VTS supervision range from small leisure and commercial boats to some of the largest ocean-going ships engaged in global trade. VTS plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of vessels navigating its designated area of control, which spans nearly 300 square miles of water across the Forth and Tay estuaries. This essential service is vital for maintaining safe and efficient maritime operations within these busy waterways. Our Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Centre, located at the Port of Grangemouth, offers an exciting opportunity for a Trainee VTS Operator. This role operates on a shift system, providing extended periods of scheduled time off between cycles, along with a highly competitive salary. As a VTS Operator you will work 12-hour shifts, ensuring round-the-clock coverage, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, working an average of 145 shifts annually. Key Responsibilities Once qualified, you will support the Duty Assistant Harbour Master in managing the Vessel Traffic System, having due regard to weather conditions, tides, size and nature of vessels. Assist with monitoring all river traffic movements in the Forth and Tay through the VTS system to ensure the safety of shipping and to determine arrival/departure times as backup to the Harbour Master. General administrative duties related to daily operations, including e-filing and updating relevant IT records for shipping movements. What We’re Looking For There are no specific Marine qualifications are required for this position as comprehensive training will be provided. However, we are seeking candidates with strong communication skills, excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to maintain focus over extended periods. Good written and verbal English skills are also essential for ensuring accuracy in reporting, preparing documentation and co-ordinating with team members and external stakeholders Full UK driving licence Right to work in the UK Upon successful completion of your training, you will achieve the internationally recognised VTS C-103 Operator certification.
