Capi was founded by Mitch Riley, Scott Liddle, and Tom Watson. Mitch and Scott were COO/CFO/GC and CRO/CMO at Taptap Send, a remittance unicorn, and have spent two decades between them working in emerging markets. Tom is a third-time founder having founded Hubble and P4SD.
Role Overview
As our first full-time legal hire, you will provide comprehensive legal advice covering all aspects of our business operations. From leading the legal side of equity and debt fundraising to negotiating partner contracts to engaging with our regulators, this role will be varied and challenging. In addition, you will be responsible for obtaining licenses in new markets. To succeed, you need to relish working on problems you’ve never encountered before and finding creative solutions to difficult challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on a wide range of matters including corporate governance, fundraising (debt and equity), commercial contracts, intellectual property, data privacy, and regulatory compliance
Lead applications for licenses / regulatory partnerships in new markets, including in Africa, including drafting AML/CFT policies tailored to these markets
Manage and mitigate legal risks associated with new product launches and business initiatives
Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements and partnerships
Ensure compliance with financial services regulations, including AML/KYC requirements
Collaborate with external counsel as necessary
Advise on employment law matters and assist with HR-related legal issues across multiple jurisdictions in Europe and Africa
Eventually, recruit and manage Legal Counsel
Qualifications
Qualified lawyer with 1-3 years PQE in firm, and 1-3 years in-house
In-house experience at a high-performance company (ideally a VC-backed start-up)
Fluency in French (both spoken and written, including legal drafting) and English
Work experience in financial services regulation strongly preferred
You find unfamiliar problems exciting rather than daunting
You’re creative when faced with novel challenges
Willingness to travel to our markets up to 3 weeks a quarter
Experience working in / with emerging markets preferred
