The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) is seeking to appoint a part-time locum consultant for one year in Paediatric Rheumatology and Chronic Pain. The appointee will join the other consultants in Bristol, providing a paediatric rheumatology tertiary service to the children of Bristol and across the South West of England; and join the highly specialist interdisciplinary team in the nationally commissioned Bath Centre for Pain Services.
Main duties of the job
The post is based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children working closely with local district general hospitals. The post holder will work alongside the existing consultants. Duties will include:
1. Bristol Royal Hospital for Children: Monthly rheumatology clinic, MDM (multi-disciplinary meetings), radiology meetings, teaching and day case/inpatient reviews as appropriate.
2. Royal United Hospital (RUH), and Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath: Twice monthly full day rheumatology clinics – am paediatrics, pm adolescent.
3. Derriford Hospital, Plymouth: Rheumatology outreach clinic every 6 months, supporting local paediatric team.
4. Bath Centre for Pain Services, RUH: Three times per month full day clinical sessions including outpatient clinic, residential programme teaching, team meetings within the Paediatric Chronic Pain Service.
5. Paediatric rheumatology service: Provide consulting service for acute requests coming into the department within normal working hours. 6.5 weeks per annum.
Person specification
Qualifications & Training
* Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview.
* Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.
Experience
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in paediatric rheumatology and chronic pain.
* Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
* Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department.
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
* Up to date knowledge and experience of diagnosing and managing paediatric rheumatology diseases and musculoskeletal complaints.
* Up to date knowledge on assessing young people with chronic pain conditions.
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty.
* Broad range of IT skills.
Clinical Governance and Audit
* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
* Positive approach to evidence-based practice.
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.
Research
* Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
* Evidence of involvement in research.
* Evidence of peer review research papers.
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.
Teaching and Training
* Experience of teaching medical students.
* Experience of supervising trainees.
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team.
* Formal teaching qualification.
