WORCESTERSHIRE ACUTE HOSPITALS NHS TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Endoscopy Decontamination HCA Pay Band: 2 Hours: 37.5 hours per week Location / Department: Worcester Royal Hospital Accountable to: Matron Reports to: Senior Sister/Unit Manager Ref: Key Working Relationships: Ward/Department staff Patients and their relatives/carers/significant other Staff in other Departments Risk Assessment: The post involves manual handling activities, exposure to body fluids and exposure to high noise levels. It may also involve exposure to challenging behaviour. Job Purpose: To be responsible for leading the decontamination team in the processing of all endoscopes. Have the ability to co-ordinate and direct staff to provide an efficient and timely service to all users. To assist with the use of and maintain complex medical equipment, for a variety of endoscopic procedures. To assist with providing nursing care for both in patients and out patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy as required. General Duties: To comply with all Trust Policies and Procedures to maintain a safe working environments for patients and staff To report any untoward incidents and complaints Work as a member of the team, demonstrate the ability to liaise, effectively and sensitivity with all users of the department To act in a manner, which promotes positive working relationships and maintains the professional image of the Trust. To attend to the activities of daily living needs of patients, under the supervision and direction of a qualified nurse, to ensure that patients receive care appropriate to their needs. All care given must be documented in the patient record and countersigned by a trained. Principle Duties: Have sound knowledge of the principles of Decontamination ensuring and policies are complied with. This will include Health and Safety, COSHH, Infection control policies, BSG guidelines, CFPP 01-01 and 01-06 Undertake regular audits of decontamination processes and action any discrepancies Ensure all traceability systems are followed. Records kept accurately. The post holder will be expected to maintain their own professional development. To have completed competencies in relation to cleaning of endoscopes To assist in promoting and maintaining an effective learning environment for the decontamination learn as well as acting as a facilitator in the supervision and teaching of junior staff Participate in the induction and training of new staff, monitoring the performance of staff to ensure they meet the standard required and update training as necessary or annually. Learn new skills and develop existing skills, and as necessary attend updates and training extremely. Promote quality of care by implementing new standards and work methods. Work at all times within the Trusts Policies and Procedures. Participate in team meetings. Responsible for the day to day management of the decontamination area. This will include, liaising with colleagues and managers. Taking any necessary action to meet the requirements of users. Organise and prioritise own workload to meet the demands of the service. Assist in ensuring that all staff shortages are filled and staff annual leave is taken appropriately to fulfil service needs, which may include working across in endoscopy sites with the trust. Assess work priorities and related problems by taking actions to resolve them. Assist in the management of staff time keeping, staff absence Have a flexible and adaptive approach to working hours and shifts.Participate on Out of Hours on call service. Ensure equipment maintained and service agreements are adhered to Promote an efficient and cost effective use of resources, be involved in trialling new accessories that are cost effective and be responsible for ordering of such items To attend to the activities of daily living needs of patients e.g. Nutritional needs, hygiene, toileting and mobility, if required. To assist in the transferring of patients between wards and departments, using correct manual handling techniques and equipment as appropriate. To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies. To report immediately to the Nurse in Charge any observed change in a patients condition or any concern expressed by a patient about nursing care or medical treatment Communication and Relationship: Report to and action, informing management of any disruption to service faulty equipment and ensure equipment is maintained and repaired promptly to meet the needs of the service The relationship with both staff and patients should be discreet, bearing in mind that all information regarding patients must be kept confidential Report to the nurse in charge of the ward/department matters of concern relating to patients and the ward/department environment Answer the telephone, refer to the appropriate person Answer bleeps taking accurate messages and relay to appropriate person Be aware of the need to greet visitors to the ward/department and ascertain the purpose of their visit. To ensure the privacy and dignity of patients at all times Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment To attend ward/departmental meetings as appropriate Clerical Duties: Undertake a range of clerical duties, this may involve: Reception/telephone duties Basic computer skills Stock control Prepare notes using both electronic and manual systems To file reports, correspondence, forms etc. as required Cleaning: Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of area and equipment as instructed Knowledge of the following infection control policies is particularly relevant to this post HIC19 Decontamination Policy/HIC 13 Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Policy Manage the records and reporting problems with any weekly quarterly and annual testing on automated Endoscope re-processors, help co=ordinate action plan to resolve any problems
