An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Secretary within the Respiratory Medicine Department at St James's University Hospital, which provides support to the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit & Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, playing a vital role in the provision of outstanding patient care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
This role is both demanding and interesting, but you will be joining a team of friendly and well-established Clinicians and Nurse Specialists, as well as a supportive team of Administrative Staff and other key members of the team who provide important medical input to our patients.
We are looking for an experienced Medical Secretary who is able to demonstrate flexibility, the ability to work under pressure, and deal with a variety of tasks to meet deadlines, as well as good communication and organizational skills.
Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities
Principal duties and areas of responsibility include:
1. Typing/proofreading clinical correspondence relating to outpatient and inpatient attendances and other patient-related correspondence on behalf of the consultant and clinical teams.
2. Using a range of IT skills to support the clinical work of the consultant, e.g., use of databases and spreadsheets to monitor test results for patients.
3. Supporting administrative processes as deemed appropriate by the Senior Medical Secretary and PSC.
4. Supporting the clinical teams in the delivery of excellent patient care by actively working with colleagues and other Departments.
5. Answering phone calls and dealing with enquiries relating to patients and clinical work from a variety of sources.
6. Liaising with GPs, hospital staff, and others on behalf of the consultant in relation to clinical workload.
7. Maintaining appropriate databases to support the delivery of the 18-week pathway or other waiting time standards.
8. Assisting in the coordination of test results, bringing these to the attention of the consultant and taking resulting action as required.
9. Providing guidance to clerical support officers as necessary.
10. Ensuring that health records are maintained to a high standard at all times.
11. Accessing information systems to obtain clinical information as required by the medical teams.
12. Working as part of the team to ensure that all phone calls are answered within the department during core office hours.
13. Providing cover for other team secretaries/clerical staff when on annual leave or sick leave.
14. Any other duties that may be deemed necessary by the Trust/Directorates that are commensurate to the role.

Qualifications
* GCSE's in English & Math at grade C or above
* Audio Typing/Word processing skills equivalent to RSA Level II or above
* Medical Administration qualification such as AMSPAR
* Pitman Training qualification or equivalent Medical secretary diploma
* Medical terminology diploma
* ECDL
