Department/Role overview
As a Server Engineer the primary focus of this role will be to provide 3rd line operational support within our IT - Platforms Infrastructure Team. You will manage and maintain the day-to-day operations of backend IT systems, as well as implementing new technologies and systems. You will work in a dynamic environment, handling both Business as Usual (BAU) and project-based tasks.
This role reports to the Infrastructure Team Leader. Hours of work are 9:00 am - 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday, with requirements to work the On Call rota on a rotating basis. Additional overtime outside core hours and at weekends for system maintenance and other out of hours work will be required.
Main responsibilities
* Monitor, manage, and proactively optimise all servers and infrastructure applications to ensure top-tier performance and availability.
* Oversee and support VMware infrastructure, ensuring seamless operation and efficiency.
* Ensure the effective management and maintenance of SAN infrastructure to ensure reliable and effective data storage solutions.
* Provide expert support for cloud-based solutions, ensuring smooth and efficient integration as well as effective support.
* Develop and implement automation scripts and tools, taking part in automation initiatives to enhance server management and streamline maintenance tasks.
* Create, update, and review infrastructure documentation in accordance with Ashurst standards, ensuring clarity and precision.
* Adhere strictly to IT processes and procedures, especially regarding Change Control, Privileged Access Management, and system security, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
* Resolve all logged incidents and service requests promptly, and support major incident activities, as well as problem, change, and configuration management processes.
* Collaborate with the Service Delivery team to manage escalations and resolve tickets effectively, ensuring high-quality service delivery.
* Participate in operational rotas to maintain environmental stability and proactively identify and address potential issues.
* Engage with vendors to provide support and guidance, enhancing service delivery and resolving technical challenges.
* Work closely with the global IT - Platforms Infrastructure Team to deliver seamless support across different regions and time zones to our user community.
Essential skills and experience
* Extensive experience with Microsoft Back Office products
* Proficiency in Microsoft Active Directory 2016 and newer as well as familiarity with Entra ID.
* Experience with Windows Server versions 2016 - 2022
* Knowledge of Microsoft clustering technology
* Scripting skills with a focus on automating and streamlining server management processes. (Powershell, Working with APIs, etc)
* Expertise in virtualisation technologies, particularly VMware
* Experience with SAN Storage solutions. (DellEMC, HPE, vSAN)
* Azure and M365 experience, particularly with EntraID and cloud adoption.
* Experience with configuring, supporting and optimising ADFS and SSO technologies as well as migration to Entra ID.
* Understanding of network fundamentals and protocols
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a cross-functional team.
* Experience working in agile environments
* Familiarity with ITIL principles and frameworks, experience with best practice adherence.
* Experience working within security best practices and compliance requirements
* Experience working within strict change control processes.
Desirable skills and experience
* Experience with automated deployment tools (e.g., SCCM, Intune)
* Experience with scripting and automation tools beyond PowerShell (e.g., Python, IaC)
* Experience with monitoring and performance tuning tools (e.g., PRTG, SolarWinds)
* Knowledge of IT governance and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, Cyber Essentials)
* Familiarity with incident response and disaster recovery planning
* Understanding of vulnerability management with experience in remediation and risk management.
