The Role:
We have a fantastic opportunity within our Energy business unit for an exceptional Head of Engineering Assurance and Design Management to lead our engineering and design functions, driving excellence, innovation, and compliance across our projects. This is a senior leadership role, reporting directly to the Director of Engineering and Technical Services, and playing a critical part in shaping the future of engineering assurance and design management within the Energy business unit.
Responsibilities:
As Head of Engineering Assurance and Design Management, you will:
Engineering Leadership & Assurance
* Develop and embed a risk-based assurance framework across all project phases.
* Ensure temporary and permanent works are delivered with integrity, supported by a highly skilled team of engineering professionals.
* Provide strategic oversight and technical peer review to mitigate risks and enhance constructability.
* Input into all engineering activities at pre-contract and delivery stages.
* Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, health & safety, quality, and environmental standards.
* Work closely with Operations Directors to allocate appropriate resources for temporary works and other key engineering functions.
* Represent Morgan Sindall Infrastructure in industry forums and professional bodies.
Design Management
* Ensure design management processes are effective, scalable, and fit for purpose.
* Support project and framework teams in appointing competent design professionals.
* Engage with key design partners to ensure alignment with business needs.
* Conduct consultant performance assessments, focusing on cost, programme efficiency, digital capability, innovation, and technical adequacy.
* Manage high-level relationships with consulting engineers and in-house design teams.
Innovation & Carbon Leadership
* Promote the use of carbon measurement tools such as CarboniCa to reduce embodied carbon and support PAS2080 accreditation.
* Foster a culture of innovation, supporting R&D initiatives and best practice sharing across the business.
* Work closely with project teams to challenge the status quo and drive continuous improvement.
Requirements
This role requires a proven leader with a passion for engineering and innovation. The ideal candidate will have:
Qualifications & Experience:
* Degree in Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional accreditation.
* Extensive senior-level experience in design and engineering management within civil engineering, construction, and infrastructure.
* Strong understanding of commercial, contractual, and procurement models.
* Proven ability to manage design processes, assurance regimes, and compliance frameworks.
* Experience in working within joint ventures, alliances, or other collaborative environments.

About our Energy business
We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.
Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair and refurbishment services.
