Our client reports its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, meeting both mandatory and voluntary Streamlined energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) obligations.
To improve our understanding and help inform our decision making, we are seeking the support of an experienced Carbon Data Analyst to undertake a period of analysis to improve the accuracy and quality of our data and support the fuller implementation of our selected carbon accounting engine. This role is required to further improve our approach regarding the analysis of our Scope 3 (upstream and downstream) emissions and our capacity to analyze data granularly at the same time as supporting wider business goals. The importance of having more granular data has become apparent as we move to set near-term and long-term science-based targets for the abatement of our emissions.
Main Duties
Reporting to the Head of Sustainability, and as a member of the Procurement & Supply Chain (P&SC) team:
* Building on less granular mandatory and voluntary SECR compliant analysis, undertake deep analysis of the business’ Scope 3 input data for the period Jan 2022 to June 2024 in accordance the GHG Protocol Technical Guidance to facilitate the application of a broader, more accurate, range of emissions factors. Where possible extend the analysis beyond the Spend-based method to include other methods for calculating emissions including the Average-data method and/or Hybrid-method, as applicable.
* Upload data into the business’ selected carbon accounting engine and apply relevant emissions factors (in keeping with best industry practice), ensuring reported output tCO2e quantities are checked and validated.
* Ensure all relevant CO2e emissions are accounted for, identifying wider opportunities to improve on earlier less granular reporting across Scopes 1, 2 and 3.
* Support the completion of CO2e disclosures under our Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) commitment and near-term targets, in our annual Sustainability Report, and in applying for inclusion under the CDPs global disclosure system for Companies.
* Present data and insights from your analysis to further drive the business towards achieving its SBTi near-term targets, and internal SBTi aligned long-term (net-zero) targets.
* Work closely with colleagues in the P&SC team to improve data capture and presentation, by helping them to seek relevant data from suppliers so that the Supplier-specific method for calculating emissions from purchased goods and services can be applied.
* Working with our Supply Chain Analyst, support efforts to implement a spend taxonomy in purchasing to pay solution, assisting P&SC buyers on data collection, entry, and accuracy at point of purchase.
* Support the wider implementation and use of our carbon accounting engine by:
* Writing a methodology for the transfer of data into this tool, and for the subsequent application of relevant emission factors.
* Building forms in the tool for the periodic collection of data across Scope 1, 2 and relevant categories of Scope 3.
* Preparing standard reports for the presentation of collected data (across all Scopes).
* Beginning to collate data on Scope 4 avoided emissions utilizing the embedded functionality.
* Support the Head of Sustainability and colleagues in the wider P&SC team in the quantification of our SBTi aligned CO2e abatement measures (all Scopes) to determine, cost, implementation timescales, and resulting CO2e savings.
* Support analysis of carbon data reporting in responses to supplier assurance questionnaires, or as collected in deep-dive supply chain risk assessments or requests for quotation/proposal.
Qualifications
* A deep understanding of CO2e data analysis, reporting and reduction.
* Experience in greenhouse gas emissions analysis in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Technical Guidance for Calculating Scope 3 Emissions.
* An experience-based understanding of supply chain operations and the activities of a procurement and supply chain function, including processes, relevant terminology, and the structure of spend data.
* Experienced uploading data to a carbon accounting engine and applying relevant emissions factors (including DEFRA, Ecoinvent and IEA and user defined factors).
* Excellent IT skills, particularly in spreadsheets and data analysis, ideally with experience of PowerBI.
* Proactive and pragmatic approach to solving problems.
* The ability to manage projects independently.
* Naturally curious, self-starting, and enthusiastic.
* Creative thinker, able to challenge established ways of doing things with a continuous improvement attitude.
