JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Essential Functions:
1. Independent decision making when circumstances warrant such action.
2. Tactfully manage and interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
3. Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to nursing home operation.
4. Possess leadership ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel.
5. Plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc. of the nursing service department.
6. Maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc. and the appearance of nursing areas; regular inspection of nursing units for sanitation; order, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.
7. Seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
8. Demonstrate patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning.
9. Use your senses of sight, hearing, and feeling at a level which allows you to hear and interpret correctly, spoken directions, warning alarms, and requests for information or guidance, as well as the ability to distinguish objects clearly and assess conditions, and/or become aware of usage or unstable conditions in the work environment 100% of the time, and assess residents.
10. Lifting and caring for equipment and supplies weighing 25 lbs.
11. Awareness of the exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and blood borne pathogen risk.
12. Professional demeanor in stressful situations when working with residents, personnel, administration, and physicians.
13. Willing to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
14. Commitment to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days per week; allowing for arrangements to have been made with designee to accept said responsibility upon his/her absence.
15. Community, civic health, project involvement as appropriate.
16. Attend and participate in continuing educational programs designed to keep abreast of changes in the profession, as well as to maintain your license on a current status.
Administrative Functions:
1. Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the Nursing Services Department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
2. Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
3. Develop, maintain, and periodically update the Nursing Departments Policy and Procedure Manuals.
4. Develop methods for coordination of nursing service with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents' total regimen of care.
5. Develop, maintain, and periodically update written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
6. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc. as necessary.
7. Maintain a reference library of written nursing material (i.e. PDRs, Drug Handbook, Federal and State Regulations, etc.) that will assist the nursing service in meeting the day-to-day needs of the residents.
8. Develop, implement, and maintain an ongoing quality assurance program for the nursing department.
9. Assist the Administrator and Social Worker in developing, implementing, and periodically updating the written procedures for the Discharge Planning Program.
10. Participate in survey (inspections) made by authorized government agencies and fill out all necessary forms that are requested.
11. Develop and implement a nursing service organization structure.
12. Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator as necessary/required concerning the operation of the Nursing Department.
OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long-term care facility, or other related health care facility.
2. Training experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices is beneficial.
3. Understanding of what it takes to direct and supervise the care of the aged and chronically ill.
4. Read, write, and speak the English language fluently and communicate orally and/or in writing with residents, co-workers, families, and the public.
