UTEC is looking to hire a Customs Compliance Specialist on a full-time, permanent basis. Based at their facility in Aberdeen, the Customs Compliance Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring that all import and export activities comply with applicable customs regulations for the region/s applicable. While data accuracy will be the primary objective of the role, the position also requires operational involvement and assistance to the logistics team as shipments go live. The role will regionally cover the Americas and Europe.
Duties & Main Responsibilities
* Ensure accuracy of customs declarations and other related documents prior to lodging.
* Assist the Logistics team in handling import and export shipments during high volume periods and be actively involved at time of all shipments front running compliance requirements.
* Ensure all operations adhere to customs and trade laws.
* Classify products according to the Harmonized System (HS) code, also develop and maintain an in-house list of applicable and accurate tariff codes that are business specific for regular utilisation.
* Act as the primary point of contact in this regard both internal and external as required.
* Provide guidance to internal teams on customs-related matters.
* Identify and mitigate potential customs risks and issues.
* Refine and implement operational customs compliance procedures and policies.
* Keep up to date with changes in customs laws and regulations.
* Work with freight forwarders, brokers, and other involved parties.
* Conduct internal audits to ensure compliance with customs regulations.
* Assist and ensure corrective actions are taken when information is found to be incorrect.
* Provide training to staff on customs compliance issues.
* Assist and manage record-keeping systems for all customs documentation.
Required
* Strong understanding of customs legislation, tariff schedules, and import/export controls including:
• Return Goods relief
• Temporary Import & Export
• Postponed VAT accounting & implications
• Preference declaration on imports
• EAR and ITAR regulation - US
• Restricted goods & associated licensing – UK
* Bachelor’s degree in business administration, international relations, logistics, or a related field a plus.
* At least five years of experience in customs compliance, logistics, and international trade.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and prioritize effectively.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
* Meticulous in handling documentation.
* Ability to work independently and to independently prioritize activities.
* Ability to analyse data and draw supported conclusions.
* Proficiency in logistics software and IT systems, mostly Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel etc.
* Ability to remain flexible and calm in a dynamic environment.
* Good problem-solving skills.
