Clinical Teaching Fellows for Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking Clinical Teaching Fellows in General Internal Medicine to join the team at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, starting on August 2025 for one year. This post is ideal for doctors who wish to develop their teaching skills while continuing clinical practice. The role is divided into 60% clinical duties in General Internal Medicine and 40% teaching responsibilities.
Successful candidates will be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, working closely with Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth, and supporting Foundation trainees and International Medical Graduates. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in teaching, simulation-based training, and quality improvement projects, with the option to complete a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education.
Main duties of the job
Teaching Responsibilities (40%)
1. Deliver bedside teaching, tutorials, and simulation-based training for medical students and foundation trainees.
2. Identify learning needs, develop teaching materials, and assess students' progress.
3. Mentor students, provide study advice, and support pastoral care.
4. Assist in the induction and training of International Medical Graduates.
5. Participate in quality improvement projects and support trainees with portfolio development.
6. Collaborate with other Clinical Teaching Fellows to enhance teaching programs.
Clinical Responsibilities (60%)
1. Rotate through three General Internal Medicine specialties (e.g., Respiratory, Cardiology, Stroke, Care of the Elderly).
2. Participate in ward rounds, board rounds, and manage acutely unwell patients.
3. Contribute to a 1 in 15 medical on-call rota, including nights and weekends.
4. Support junior doctors and participate in clinical governance activities, including M&M meetings and audits.

1. Full GMC Registration
2. A minimum of 18 months full time hospital service in the UK
3. Basic level training certificate (BLTC)
4. Able to carry out the duties described in the job description
Desirable
1. Experience of UK foundation programme
2. Teaching experience of medical students, junior medical staff, or nursing staff
3. Training in evidence based medicine
4. Evidence of teaching qualification
5. Ability to run SIM mannequin software
