The Role
The Associate Professor's role within the Department of Graphic Design will have a combination of teaching, research, and knowledge exchange responsibilities. The role will require significant leadership and management skills, working with the Head of Department, Course Leaders, Year Group Coordinators, Module Leaders, and Visiting Lecturers. Those with a focus on teaching will be innovators in learning practice, who study and promote new and good practices across the Department, Institution, and beyond. Those with a focus on research and knowledge transfer will work to support staff within the Department with research domains, aiming to develop research opportunities, bids, and work in combination with the School Director of Research.
The Associate Professor will work with the Head of Department in relation to Department vision, staff development, and appraisal processes. The BA Graphic Design Course has a significant Student Exchange Programme supported by ‘Turing Funding’. The successful candidate will instigate new and build upon existing external links, supporting course recruitment, partnerships, studios/employers, and initiating and planning the development of new courses.
As an Associate Professor in Graphic Design, you will initially be involved in Year and Module Leadership, ensuring the year team adheres to University regulations, policy, and procedures, and the Academic Framework principles, promoting the development of innovation in learning, teaching, assessment (LTA), and recent initiatives in the development of Future Skills and interdisciplinary work.
The role will involve ensuring a culture of continuous improvement in collaboration with the Heads of Department, Course Leaders, Faculty Senior Leadership Team, Faculty Advisory Boards, industry experts, and alumni.
The Person
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about the discipline of Graphic Design and have significant practical graphic design experience. The successful candidate will bring to the role substantial experience of teaching and managing Graphic Design Educational Programs or courses. This will require strong organizational and administrative abilities, team, and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop and support emerging discipline practice and future-facing pedagogy.
The successful candidate will have significant professional experience as a designer or a doctorate in Graphic Design, preferably a teaching qualification and achievement of the relevant level of UKPSF recognition by the end of the probation period (if this has not already been obtained). For those experienced in teaching, this can be achieved through our Kingston Academic Practice Standards Framework.
