Ocean Career: Research Scientist at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute
Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is seeking a Scientist with a background in applied microbiology to develop an independent research program in marine discovery that fits GMGI’s mission to “address critical challenges facing our oceans, human health and the environment through innovative scientific research and education.”
It is envisioned that this program will use cutting edge ‘omics and molecular techniques to accelerate the discovery of new marine organisms, processes, and products with applications in biotechnology and human health.
We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated excellence in research, a strong publication record, and a track record of acquiring external research funding. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and an interest in translating research discoveries into practical applications. This represents an extraordinary opportunity for a motivated and entrepreneurial scientist to help build GMGI into a world-class research institute.
Responsibilities
* Develop a research program related to the discovery of novel marine microbial species, genes, and gene products with biotechnology or therapeutic applications using innovative approaches such as ‘omics, molecular biology, synthetic biology.
* Build a research group and establish collaborations with leading academic and industry partners.
* Take a leading role in identifying new funding opportunities and grant writing to support research efforts.
* Publish results in leading scientific journals and present results to both scientific and lay audiences.
* Assist with institutional fund-raising and outreach efforts.
Qualifications
* PhD in a relevant field such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology.
* Background in applied molecular microbiology.
* History of success in leading research projects with a track record of acquiring research funding through grants or other sources.
* Strong publication record.
* Strong computational skills and experience analyzing ‘omics data sets.
* Knowledge of intellectual property protection and the process of commercializing research outcomes.
* Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
* Enthusiasm and commitment to GMGI’s mission for science and education.
