We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic English Teacher and Sports Coach to join our dedicated English and Sports departments to a full time, permanent post commencing September 2025. Applicants with either independent or maintained sector backgrounds (including both Prep, Primary and Secondary schools) are welcomed.
The role requires the delivery of outstanding academic teaching of English lessons to Year 4 to Year 6 students. The role will also involve supporting the delivery of high-quality Games lessons and extra-curricular activities, with an emphasis on football and cricket coaching. Experience or a keen interest in coaching these sports will be highly advantageous.
The successful candidate will also offer exceptional pastoral support as a form teacher, facilitate the growth in personal development and confidence of children under their care and contribute actively to our vibrant co-curricular programme.

* Provide support in the planning, setup, and delivery of sports sessions, particularly in football, rugby and cricket

Principal areas of responsibility
Planning and delivery of English and Games lessons which are inspirational, clearly focused and appropriately adapted to the needs of all learners. Children enjoy learning and being challenged. St John’s is an academic school, with aspirational children and parents.
Effective assessment, monitoring and feedback strategies are used which support pupil progress and encourage personal agency and resilience. Constructive feedback is shared with parents both in formal consultation evenings and written reports, as well as informally (as appropriate).
High expectations for pupil behaviour are expected, modelled and effectively managed. School values are consistently promoted.
Children are given excellent pastoral support and concerns (either academic or pastoral) are dealt with sensitively and recorded effectively and promptly. Information is shared with appropriate senior staff and other agencies, as appropriate.
Teachers work independently, and as part of a team. They attend staff meetings, assemblies and review meetings as required. Teachers contribute actively and regularly to the co-curricular life of the school, participate in the duty rota and trips, and attend occasional weekend and evening activities as required. Teachers are aware of, and work within, statutory requirements relating to teachers’ responsibilities.
Teachers engage in their own professional development, and reflect, record and develop their professional skills in liaison with their line manager and others where relevant.
Person specification:
* Qualified teacher status
* Good degree in relevant subject area.
* PGCE or equivalent.
* Previous experience working in a Prep/Primary school.
* The ability to promote good progress and outcomes by pupils.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with parents, students, teachers, and other staff.
* A commitment to equal opportunities and inclusion.
* A passion for sports and physical education, particularly cricket and football.
* Experience in coaching or playing cricket and / or football.
* Enthusiastic, reliable, and committed to promoting a positive sporting experience.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* First Aid certification (or a willingness to obtain one)
* A good understanding of child safeguarding policies within the St John’s, Northwood context.
* Enhanced DBS check (to be completed before starting the role).
Desirable Attributes:
* Previous experience working in a school or youth sports coaching environment.
* Coaching qualifications in football or cricket (e.g., FA Level 1, ECB Level 1 / 2).

* St John’s have its own salary scale, which is above the Central London Maintained Scale. A salary at the appropriate point on the Teachers’ scale will be offered to the successful candidate and will be commensurate with the role, and with experience and qualifications.
