Job overview
Candidates should have completed the Maternity Support Worker Qualification and have experience in working across all maternity areas.
To assist under supervision in the delivery of fundamental nursing and midwifery care in liaison with the multidisciplinary team.
To contribute to the implementation and progression of a range of women/birthing people treatment and care programmes as delegated by a registered healthcare practitioner, reporting back on progress.
To work in partnership with midwives and members of the multi-disciplinary team in providing clinical, practical, social, and environmental support as necessary within the hospital and community setting.
To assist with clinical duties to ensure the effective running of the ward/department.
To maintain own personal development with support from ward/departmental manager.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
1. To assist women/birthing people with activities of daily living whilst encouraging independence, as appropriate.
2. Demonstrate, encourage and assist women/birthing people in undertaking therapeutic activities within parameters of agreed care plans and under guidance of registered practitioners.
3. To monitor and record women/birthing people’s clinical observations, escalating appropriately to a registered midwife as required.
4. To assist with women/birthing people nutritional needs – eating, drinking, menu selection, meal delivery and special diets according to the individual’s needs.
5. To assist in the maintenance of up to date, comprehensive and accurate records in accordance with current legal requirements both written and digital.
6. To assist in the admission and discharge of women/birthing people including any necessary risk assessments.
7. To escort women/birthing people and families to other departments within the hospital as required.
8. Assist the midwife in the preparation of the birthing environment and provide support to the labouring women/birthing people under the supervision of the midwife.
9. To perform Neonatal observations e.g., meconium and Group B Strep [GBS] and tests e.g. blood glucose monitoring, that are necessary for some new-borns and recording these in the baby notes or maternity IT system following the completion of Epic Training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management, photocopying, transporting of equipment/data/paperwork to other departments, booking women/birthing people transport and sending referrals.
2. To maintain confidentiality at all times, in and out of the hospital environment.
3. To make appointments, follow up non-attendees at clinic under direction and supervision of midwife, send out invitations for antenatal education classes.
Person specification
* Functional Skills Level 2 in Numeracy and Literacy or GCSEs Maths and English Grades A-C.
* Care Certificate.
* NVQ level 3 or equivalent in Health Care.
* Significant experience within a care setting/environment.
* Experience of working with women/birthing people.
