About the job Job summary DBS was established under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 on 1 December 2012, operating from two sites, Liverpool and Darlington. We operate on behalf of government delivering Disclosure functions in England, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, and Barring functions for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Safeguarding means protecting peoples health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. We provide a service that enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make better informed, safer recruitment and other decisions. We do this by providing information to enable them to determine whether individuals are unsuitable or unable to undertake certain work, particularly with occupations involving regular contact with vulnerable groups, including children. Job description To provide day to day legal operational management to support barring appeals and other litigation, including: Triage of new cases to ensure cases are progressed in a way which represents best value for money and quality; Reviewing cases and engaging with lawyers to ensure efficient progression of cases; Drafting correspondence and court documents in line with instructions and under the supervision of qualified lawyers; Instructing counsel; Undertaking legal research; Supporting the development of procedural guidance and template documentation; Maintaining management information spreadsheets; Monitoring key dates to ensure compliance; Contribute to the management of the legal team including direct line management of and attending and contributing at Directorate/Corporate engagement forums; To proactively contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and more efficient ways of working; To work flexibly and undertake such other duties appropriate to the level of the post that may reasonably be required, including providing collaborative support to the other SEO in post; To work collaboratively with colleagues within the team, Legal Services, and the wider DBS to gain relevant information and share ideas of best practice and efficiencies, that will continually improve the service that we offer to our customers. Person specification Essential Criteria Ability Demonstrable ability to build a high performing team, to deliver outstanding service, and a commitment to driving an inclusive workplace culture in your teams and beyond. Demonstrable ability to work autonomously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate effectively with lawyers and senior managers. Ability to support a culture of continuous improvement, proactively identifying areas for improvement and working with the wider team to support implementation. Experience Significant experience in a legal or regulatory field relevant to DBS activities, such as civil or criminal litigation regulatory or enforcement work. Demonstrable planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise to achieve shared goals while working in a fast-paced environment. Desirable Experience Experience of working in a public sector legal team. Experience of line managing or supervising more junior members of staff. Experience of maintaining and providing management information relating to volume matters. Technical Educated to degree level.
