Job Summary:
Provision of a high level of clinical and professional leadership for the Acute Speech and Language therapy services within the Medicine Division. To support the delivery of a high-quality and safe service with a positive working experience for staff and service users.
To be an advanced clinical specialist and lead for the dysphagia and inpatient services within the hospital.
As an autonomous practitioner with an advanced level of knowledge, skills, and experience to assess, diagnose, and manage complex patients on one's own caseload.
To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of one's professional and clinical work, working to agreed national and professional standards.
To plan, deliver, and evaluate the service related to dysphagia and inpatients, including the video fluoroscopy service.
Key Relationships:
All relevant members of the patient care team, Divisional Management teams, external providers, and commissioners of Paediatric healthcare, Local Authorities, NHS England, Cheshire & Mersey ICB, and commissioning Teams & service managers, providers, equipment manufacturers, voluntary and third sector organizations.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide highly specialized written and verbal advice to a range of professionals regarding the management and care of clients with dysphagia/inpatients.
2. Demonstrate highly developed dysphagia assessment and advice for this client group.
3. Use highly specialist knowledge to develop protocols and care packages in areas of expertise.
4. Liaise with relevant parent/user groups as appropriate.
5. Provide highly specialist advice/second opinions to speech and language therapists and other professionals in areas of expertise.
6. Demonstrate advanced skills in dealing with complex issues to generate appropriate strategies for caseload and workload management of self and others.
7. Be a source of senior clinical expertise within SALT for inpatients and the dysphagia service and carry one's own complex caseload.
8. Effectively examine and assess patients, identifying their problems and needs while considering medical, cognitive, psychological, social, environmental, and cultural factors.
9. Utilize examination and assessment findings to competently plan and carry out highly specialist programmes of treatment from a range of therapeutic options appropriate to each patient, using evidence-based practice and specialist knowledge.
10. Lead video fluoroscopy clinics.
11. Relate findings of assessment to presenting disease/pathology/impairment.
12. Set appropriate treatment aims and objectives in negotiation with the patient/carer and MD team if appropriate.
13. Provide highly specialist advice to other SALTs regarding the management and care of patients with highly complex conditions.
14. Monitor and review care plans against outcomes and adjust care plans to facilitate achievement of goals.
15. Raise awareness of dysphagia and communication impairments within the wider hospital setting.
16. Counsel and advise parents as required to ensure informed consent and that they are fully aware of the aims and objectives of SALT intervention.
17. Produce, disseminate, and update reports and guidelines, based on highly specialist knowledge, regarding individual care plans to carers/parents and other professionals.
18. Provide support and advice to specialist SALTs and other professionals on assessment, diagnosis, and clinical management of children with dysphagia and other complex conditions.

* Qualified speech and language therapist with appropriate experience.
