Job Description:
The post offers an exciting opportunity for experienced and motivated creative professionals with backgrounds in public engagement, public programmes, stakeholder management, and cultural space management to join one of the most progressive public sector design and policy teams in the UK, to coordinate the thought-leading and award-winning Croydon Urban Room project.
This is an exciting time to be working in Croydon. As we emerge from the impacts of the pandemic, we face an unprecedented challenge in shaping the recovery and sustainable growth of our borough. We are working innovatively, building partnerships, and strengthening ties with local communities, businesses, and wider society to create a more sustainable and inclusive future. The Planning and Sustainable Regeneration directorate, with its Placemaking Team, is central to this effort, supporting activities and programmes to promote good growth and ensure Croydon reaches its full potential, providing inclusive and inviting places to live, work, and visit.
The Croydon Urban Room is at the heart of shaping the recovery and resilience of Croydon town centre. Its role is to explore and define the future of the town centre within the changing retail landscape and democratize planning and placemaking processes.
High-quality design and placemaking are key to Croydon's vision. The borough is undergoing regeneration projects led by the council and private sector, including urban quarters, public realm improvements, and mixed-use developments. The Placemaking Team plays a vital role in transforming Croydon physically and socially.
About the Placemaking Team:
The team is an award-winning, multidisciplinary group of built environment practitioners, including urban designers, architects, landscape architects, heritage specialists, and cultural practitioners. It operates within the Strategic Planning and Regeneration directorate and collaborates across planning, design, and delivery to create high-quality, inclusive places.
The team's work has been recognized for its innovative planning and design approaches, contributing to awards and being highlighted as an exemplar of proactive planning.
About the role:
This role involves coordinating and supporting the Croydon Urban Room project, fostering public participation, and managing spaces and events. Candidates should have experience in public-facing creative and cultural programming, stakeholder engagement, marketing, graphic design, web and social media, and community outreach. Knowledge of funding, bid writing, contract management, and partnership development is also desirable.
An interest in Croydon and South London, with some understanding of urban design and town centre challenges, is beneficial.
The team values diversity and encourages applications from underrepresented groups, including disability, BIPOC, and trans+ communities.
Fixed-term contract only until March 2026.
The role may require regular weekend and occasional evening work.
