Job summary
This training position provides a unique opportunity for optometrists to gain specialist training in a broad range of hospital optometry. The successful applicants will be offered comprehensive experience in hospital clinical work including complex contact lens (including cosmetic & scleral), LVA, refraction, spectacle dispensing, plus specialist training in medical retina, cataract and glaucoma extended role.
They will also be introduced to clinical teaching, audit, research and management.
By the end of the training, the post holders should be ready to apply for a hospital specialist optometrist position.

This role involves the successful candidate undertaking an Advanced Clinical Practice in Ophthalmology MSc. Candidates that have previously undertaken or have started the programme will not be considered.
Main duties of the job
Completion of this hospital optometry training post should prepare you to be ready to take a specialist position in the Hospital Eye Service.
You will be offered a comprehensive experience in hospital clinical work and an introduction to teaching, audit, research and management.
To undertake specialist clinical activity; this activity requires regular use of a range of advanced clinical techniques requiring dexterity and concentration. These clinics involve responsibility for clinical decision-making with support from consultants and the provision of specialised diagnosis, management, care and education of patients. To provide a clinical opinion or obtain a clinical opinion from consultant colleagues to optometric and non-optometric colleagues on the management of patients.

To provide a wide range of optometric services at City Rd and Moorfields satellites. To work under the clinical supervision of a senior optometrist or ophthalmologist as appropriate; following Optometry Department and Clinical Service Protocols. Clinical work can include:
* Refraction, including adult and paediatric; diagnostic and post-operative cases
* Specialist Contact Lens Clinics (including Scleral & Cosmetic)
* Low Vision Clinics, adult and paediatric.
* Working in an 'extended role' capacity in a variety of ophthalmology clinics which can include Medical Retina, Glaucoma or Cataract clinics.
* Working in extended role without direct medical supervision in clinic, e.g. paediatric CVC [Subject to completion of appropriate training and assessments].
* Refracting patients to specific protocols as part of studies.
* Anterior segment imaging
* Spectacle dispensing
* Routine eye examinations for Moorfields staff DSE assessments

Professional Registration Essential
* GOC registration MCOptom or equivalent
Qualifications Essential
* B.Sc. Hons Optometry or equivalent 2:1 or above
Knowledge and Experience Essential
* Experience of examining patients in a clinical setting
* 1 year pre-registered optometrist.
Desirable
* Hospital pre-reg. experience and clinical work
* Community optometry Post-qualification experience >2 years
Skills and Attributes Essential
* Regular use of a slit-lamp to examine the anterior and posterior eye with specialist lenses
* Regular and Competent performance of retinoscopy
* Ability to use Electronic patient record systems
* Good written communication skills
* Ability to analyse and interpret ocular imaging e.g. OCT, visual fields, topography to a basic clinical level e.g. screening
Desirable
* Ability to perform cycloplegic retinoscopy
* Ability to interpret patients ocular status and initiate an appropriate management plan
