Accelerated Nursing Apprenticeship Programme (LD)
Are you an aspiring nurse who would like to make a difference to the lives of people we support? Would you like to be paid to become a qualified Learning Disability Nurse? Join our Accelerated Nursing Apprenticeship Programme and establish a new career in healthcare.
An exciting opportunity to join the team initially at the Additional Support Unit (ASU) in Exeter for Adults with a Learning Disability and then at the new Regional Learning Disability and Autism Unit in Dawlish from mid-2025 (The Brook).
In partnership with the Open University, we are offering suitable candidates the training and support they need to start working as a Nursing Apprentice. You'll join us as a Nursing Apprentice and undertake an accelerated programme of either 18 months for qualified Nurse Associates or 24 months for qualified Assistant Practitioners to top up your current qualification to the Learning Disability Nursing Degree.
You will also need to be prepared to work hard and undertake study in your own time as you work towards becoming a qualified Nurse.
Main Duties of the Job

If shortlisted, mandatory attendance at one of the virtual briefing sessions via MS Teams delivered by the Open University and Apprenticeship Team, scheduled for 17/9/2024.
Interviews will be held via MS Teams on 24/10/2024.
Completion of the Trust's/OU's recruitment process.
The academic programme is due to commence in February 2025; however, we would expect staff to be in post before this date.
Nursing apprentices completing the accelerated programme will be paid based on their current Agenda for Change Band 4 scale starting at £26,540 and will remain at this rate until qualification as a Registered Mental Health Nurse.

Job Responsibilities
The job description attached to this advert is for a Band 5 Registered Nurse which is the qualification you will be working towards. You will be asked to sign a Trust Learning Agreement when you commence the Programme which will amend the job description to become an Apprentice.
Supervision and support, (direct and indirect) will be provided or available to you during all tasks, with progression being dependent on the completion of set objectives throughout the programme. This will enable the apprentice to work within the organisation to gain confidence, experience and build a portfolio of evidence for apprenticeship accreditation.
Job Purpose
* To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate individual care plans.
* To provide named nurse role to people who use our service.
* To promote and improve quality of service provided.
* To manage the unit in the absence of Ward Manager / Team Leader.
* To participate in the internal rotation system including weekend working.
Duties and Responsibilities
* To be a proactive, skilled member of the ward Multi-Disciplinary team.
* To have knowledge and experience of providing individual and group clinical/therapy work.
* To demonstrate effective leadership and assist with providing advice and guidance to non-qualified staff and students.
* To be responsible for the provision and maintenance of effective therapeutic relationships, which at all times acknowledges the rights, personal dignity and encourages opportunity for growth and development of the person using this service.
* To provide cross cover to other units located on the same site when there is a clinical need.
* To work in line with agreed safeguarding protocols at all times.
* Actively engage in required training.
* To demonstrate a working knowledge of the legal requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 (including 2007 updates), Mental Capacity Act 2005 (to include Deprivation of Liberty safeguards), Care Programme Approach, and National Health Service and Community Care Act 1990.
* To work to the NICE and NMC Guidelines and Standards.

Communication & Working Relationships

* To act as named nurse for a cohort of patients.
* To assess complex health and well-being needs, develop, monitor and review care plans to meet individual needs. To update all records on Carenotes.
* To provide robust risk assessments and ensure they are updated regularly on Carenotes.
* To maintain professionalism at all times while being non-judgmental.
* To ensure safe practice working to NMC, Government and Trust policies/procedures.
* Maintain accurate documentation using the correct recording systems (mostly electronic).
Policy, Service, Research & Development Responsibility
* To be aware of national and professional developments.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* A foundation degree as a Nurse Associate or Assistant Practitioner.
* Level 2 Functional Skills, GCSE grade 4/C (or equivalent) or above in English and Maths.
* A willingness to complete Trust Mandatory Courses (will be required to complete and undertake relevant Physical Interventions training with adjustments considered if required).
