An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a team of experienced nurses within the Pre-Assessment unit at Prince Charles Hospital. The main role of the post holder will be to review waiting list patients for suitability for various surgeries and provide effective assessment of waiting list patients as part of the overall waiting list management process.
You will be a vital part of the Pre-Assessment team, supporting the Pre-Assessment Manager, and integral to the governance agenda while demonstrating excellent and effective leadership skills. Details of job responsibilities include:
* Ability to work as part of a team and have excellent verbal, non-verbal, and written communication.
* Communicating complex information between the multidisciplinary team, with a key role to liaise, inform, and brief others.
* Advising and imparting sometimes sensitive information to patients, relatives, and carers is a key job requirement, e.g., unsuitability for surgery (hypertension, obesity); the ability to demonstrate empathy is essential.
* Develop and maintain effective clinical links between the multidisciplinary team.
* Specialist knowledge and skill to undertake pre-operative assessment of patients requiring surgery.
* Evidence of at least five days study in the past two years.
* Significant post-registration experience, of which 2 years must have been on a surgical ward.
* Desirable: Physical examination skills, ILS Provider, Venepuncture, ECG skills.
* Undertake the specialised pre-operative assessment of patients requiring surgery.
* Take baseline observations and analyse against predetermined standards to gauge suitability for surgery.
* Take complex medical histories.
* Initiate routine observations and investigations.
* Interpret often conflicting results.
* Refer patients based on history, observations, and investigations (for surgery, Anaesthetics, dietetics, back to GP, etc.).
* Plan reassessment clinics.
* Initiate routine observations.
* Undertake venepuncture, cannulation, ECGs (not interpretation).
* Physical examination and stethoscopy.
* Develop highly specialised advice in ensuring patients are adequately prepared through the preoperative assessment process, including advice on weight loss, hypertension, and other ongoing medical conditions.
* Required to develop policies relevant to own role.
* Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and protocols to enable the development of programmes of care, including pre and post-operative management of surgical patients.
* Supervision of stock management.
* Responsible for ensuring physical resources are maintained to a satisfactory standard.
* Supervises Band 5s and other grades.
* Assist in identifying and achieving staff training and development needs, including performance development reviews.
* Participate in training with other team members to develop the role.
* Accessing and/or inputting data into LHB systems, e.g., Myrddin, Electronic pre-assessment system.
* Provide accurate, current, comprehensive, and concise nursing and medical records.
* Undertake clinical audit twice a year as a minimum.
* Provide evidence-based care.
* Have an active involvement in any ongoing research and/or audit projects.
* The post holder is guided by clearly defined protocols.
* The post holder is required to be accountable for their own actions, to use their initiative, and act independently with discretion to refer patients as appropriate within predefined protocols and procedures for the preoperative assessment of patients.
* The post holder supervises Band 5 nurses and administrative staff.
Person Specification
Education
* Registered nurse, Degree in Nursing, Evidence of at least five days study undertaken in the past two years.
* Relevant degree, ILS provider, Able to undertake Venepuncture & ECG.
Experience
* Significant post-registration experience in an acute surgical setting (Theatre/Anaesthetics).
* Experience of nursing audit tools, previous nurse practitioner experience.
Skills
* Leadership skills, organisational skills, management skills, excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills, effective teaching/supervisory skills.
* Physical examination, ECDL or equivalent.
Knowledge
* Current surgical nursing issues, working knowledge of multidisciplinary team working, clinical governance, audit, and research.
* Knowledge of current research.
Personal Attributes
* Motivated and enthusiastic, able to cope under pressure, non-judgemental, works well as an individual and as part of a team, flexible to the needs of the service.
