Youth Justice Service – Young Persons Substance Use Worker Cwm Taf Drug and Alcohol Service Job Description Role Youth Justice Service – Young Persons Substance Use Worker Service Flexibility to work across all areas of Cwm Taf and Bridgend, where appro priate is essential. Base location are Merthyr and Pontypridd. Location: To be confirmed Hours: Young Persons Substance Use Worker the 37 hours per week. The office bases are open Monday – Thursday 9am to 5 p.m. and Friday 9am to 4.30pm, but these posts will be required to work flexibly outside of these hours to meet the needs of children and young people. Some weekend working will also be required. Salary: Salary band £25,750 to £27,759 per annum Reports to: CYP Team Leader Team Members Reporting to Job Holder: No direct reports. Contract: Permanent, In line with funding THE SERVICE Cwm Taf Drug and Alcohol service provides a service to people who use drugs or alcohol, their families, and communities. This will include early intervention, engaging and assessing service users, needle exchange, brief interventions, outreach, training, case management, health promotion and harm reduction initiatives and recovery and aftercare services. ROLE PURPOSE The Youth Justice Service (YJS) substance worker provides a drug and alcohol service, targeting under 17 year olds coming to the attention of YJS and/or young people at risk of offending. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To assist with assessing young people identified as having substance use as a contributory factor to their offending To provide secondary prevention and therapeutic work with substance misusing individuals and/or groups coming into contact with the YJS To provide primary prevention work with non-substance using individuals and/or groups coming into contact with the YJS To empower individuals and enable them to help themselves through informed choice and decision making. To ensure access to and maintenance of appropriate support networks and services for young people. To maintain appropriate written client records and casenotes. To foster and sustain good working relationships with other members of the YJS, and other local statutory agencies and community groups To accept and assess referrals within the YJS framework To liaise and communicate effectively with significant others, including families, within the YJS framework To assess other necessary services and resources in line with individual needs through referral, negotiation, mediation and advocacy where appropriate To undertake assertive outreach, targeted at young offenders and young people at risk of offending To maintain a positive profile of Barod and the services provided, through appropriate networking, liaison and multi-agency/disciplinary working and to work in a manner which dovetails with existing statutory/community provision To maintain appropriate professional boundaries To promote awareness of substance use issues generally, and in relation to young people in particular To provide accurate information and answer queries on drug/alcohol issues To deliver talks, workshops, presentations, provide training where appropriate To assist with organising displays, exhibitions and participate in community, agency led events where appropriate To disseminate Barod and other leaflets, posters, factsheets and other literature as appropriate To provide awareness raising training and facilitate groupwork where appropriate To adhere to all Barod policies and procedures To ensure the undertaking of appropriate monitoring, review and evaluation procedures To undertake appropriate administrative tasks To co-operate with requests from Barod management and administration To take up Barod’s arrangements for support and supervision and participate in all relevant internal meetings To undertake other reasonable duties as requested, but which may not be specified within the job description. Essential Desirable Qualifications and training Expected to meet basic skills in numeracy and literacy. Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (or equivalent or relevant professional qualification) or willing to work towards. Role-related knowledge, skills & experience Experience of working with children and young people Proven ability to network and build professional relationships Knowledge of substance use treatment and care pathways Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their ethnic, cultural, social backgrounds, their gender, age, religious belief, disability and sexual orientation. Experience of facilitating group work Knowledge of substance use including evidence based therapeutic interventions Experience of facilitating therapeutic interventions Interpersonal skills Commitment to Barod values and mission.
