The Role
Operating as a senior designer within a team of up to 25 resources, the position holder will have high design technical capability and demonstrate exemplar behaviours as a role model within the team.
Progress complex design activities through to completion using design tools (eg CAD) and advise and coach team members and early careers through their activities, and where applicable support colleagues through mentoring.
Check and assure other team members work on behalf of the Principal Detail Designer including final sign off of engineering outputs and creation of Quality Care Points and Alerts as identified during checking.
Fully conversant with all Detail Design processes and Management Systems and can advise and guide team members through application of them. Including supporting external and internal audits.
Strong understanding of the design lifecycle and the value stream within the discipline (i.e. Conceptual Design through to Commissioning and Acceptance).
Will deputise for the Principal Detail Designer when required at key management meetings and stand in as the line manager of the team when the Principal is unavailable due to holidays or sickness.
Able to advise Principal Designer on Technical Matters and assist with decision making process.

Possesses in-depth knowledge of all aspects within his/her sub-discipline.
Able to perform robust analysis using recognised detail modelling, documentation and analytical tools and to make sound judgements based on experience.
Has sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design and the sound judgement needed to be able make correct trade-off decisions
Provide technical support and troubleshooting responses in assigned areas to operational units or other activities.
Possesses ability to check other people's outputs and assure quality.
Possesses ability to feedback verbally and in writing outcomes of quality checks where quality has been compromised.
What BAE Systems are looking for, from you:
Experience in Shipbuilding is essential.
Understanding of the business Operational Framework, the Engineering Framework and the Detail Design Framework - in particular recognition of the Detail Design organisational design and the demarcation of roles and communication channels.
Experience using FORAN.
Experience in engineering, design or a defence or related industry.
Good working experiences in more than one phase of the LCM, with sufficient experience of the total LCM to enable a good understanding of adjacent phases and through life engineering issues.
Typically HNC/HND qualified, likely to be in a technology, engineering or science related discipline plus Technical VQ Qualification.
Security Requirements: SC
This role will require the person to hold full Security Clearance (SC) prior to working onsite. You will need to obtain a BPSS check as part of this process. You must currently hold or be eligible and willing to obtain SC and you must be eligible to work in the UK without sponsorship and have lived and worked in the UK for a minimum 5 year period.
